VILLAGE FODELE (El Greco born village)
Duration: 1 hour
Stop At: Rethymnon, Rethymnon, Rethymnon Prefecture, Crete
RETHIMNON (This region as a whole is rich with ancient history, most notably through the Minoan civilization. Today's old town is almost entirely built by the Venetians. It is one of the best preserved old towns in Crete.)
This region as a whole is rich with ancient history, most notably through the Minoan civilisation centred at Kydonia east of Rethymno. Rethymno itself began a period of growth when the Venetian conquerors of the island decided to put an intermediate commercial station between Heraklion and Chania, acquiring its own bishop and nobility in the process. Today's old town (palia poli) is almost entirely built by the Republic of Venice. It is one of the best-preserved old towns in Crete.
From circa 1250 the city was the seat of the Latin Diocese of Retimo, which was renamed Retimo–Ario after the absorption in 1551 of the Diocese of Ario and as suppressed only after the Turkish conquest.
Duration: 2 hours
Stop At: Rethymnon, Rethymnon, Rethymnon Prefecture, Crete
The town still maintains its old aristocratic appearance, with its buildings dating from the 16th century, arched doorways, stone staircases, Byzantine and Hellenic-Roman remains, the small Venetian harbour and narrow streets. The Venetian Loggia houses the information office of the Ministry of Culture and Sports. A Wine Festival is held there annually at the beginning of July. Another festival, in memory of the destruction of the Arkadi Monastery, is held on 7–8 November.
The city's Venetian-era citadel, the Fortezza of Rethymno, is one of the best-preserved castles in Crete. Other monuments include the Neratze mosque (the Municipal Odeon arts centre), the Great Gate (Μεγάλη Πόρτα or "Porta Guora"), the Piazza Rimondi and the Loggia.
The town was captured by the Ottoman Empire in 1646 during the Cretan War (1645–69) and they ruled it for almost three centuries. The town, called Resmo in Turkish, was the centre of a sanjak (administrative part of a province) during Ottoman rule.
Duration: 2 hours
Stop At: Monastery of Arkadi, Arkadi, Rethymnon, Crete 74100 Greece
ARKADI (HISTORICAL MONASTERY- The monastery became a national sanctuary in honor of the Cretan resistance. November 8 is a day of commemorative parties in Arkadi and Rethymno. The explosion did not end the Cretan insurrection, but it attracted the attention of the rest of the world.)

This tour had some problems for my group. Namely the Tour Operator went to the wrong port to meet us. When I talked with him he said it would take 1.5 to 2 hours for him to travel to the port where we were docked (Souda) and he wanted another 250Euros to come and pick us up. This was unacceptable to our group and we told him to forget coming and we would request a refund of $796.00. The tour operator continued to insist it was my fault that he was ast the wrong port and classified my group as a cancellation/no show. I then began to email directly with Viator andeventually they as a matter of good gesture refunded the tour cost. It is my contention that any tour operator has the responsibility to know where his party is to be met. Additionally, I confirmed with the cruise lline that they had never docked at the port where he thought he was to meet us. IL cannot rate this tour company has anything but terrible unfortunaely because of the difficulty I expeirienced in getting a refund. It proved to be a good lesson learned for me and I still believe Viator to be a great company since I had booked four other tours with them and all of these turned out perfect.
