2 - 8
This tour is a scheduled open group tour (for up to 8 persons) which operates only on Wednesdays, all year round.
The central part of the tour is Topola, a small town rich in history, at just 80 kilometers from Belgrade. During our one hour long drive we can discuss local customs, present day situation in the country, other interesting places worth visiting in Serbia, or whatever you find relevant and interesting at that moment. The area we are visiting was the birthplace of the First Serbian Uprising against Ottoman rule two centuries ago. It was a seed which in years to come developed into modern Serbian state. Karadjordje Petrovic, the leader of the Uprising was born in Topola, he was also a founder of Karadjordjevic dynasty that ruled Serbia for decades.
Our first stop in exploration of Topola is the Museum dedicated to the life of Karadjordje and the Uprising he led. The Museum is situated in the remains of what used to be small fortress known as Karadjordje’s Town.
From Karadjordje’s Town we move up to the top of nearby Oplenac hill where we will pay a visit to the gorgeous mausoleum of family Karadjordjevic - Saint George’s Church. Twenty seven members of the royal family were buried in the crypt of this church. But what is most fascinating about it is a breathtaking mosaic decoration of interior which consists of 40 million pieces in 15,000 shades, depicting the best known frescoes from Serbian medieval monasteries. Since we are at Oplenac we will not miss the opportunity to visit 85 years old Royal winery, nowadays a museum, originally built by German builders and equipped with top French production lines at the time.
After descent from Oplenac, leaving historic tales behind us, our trip continues further to nearby village Vinča and one of Serbia's finest wineries - Winery Aleksandrović. Young and skillful Darko, who is enologist in the winery, is expecting us there with many interesting stories and first-hand experience in wine making process. But talking about wines, seeing the oak barrels and bottle filling lines, it's all just warm up for the best part - wine tasting, of course!
And at the very end, when we are done with history, culture and wine we move on towards neighboring town Aranđelovac, to one of several ethnic restaurants where delicious local cuisine is served in authentic “Šumadija” ambience. After lunch we return to Belgrade.
