Edinburgh probably is the most beautiful city in the world in a very unique and beautiful landscape. Grown in this environment, the city nowadays contains of two world heritage sites, the old town because of its history and the new town because of the literature and architecture.
Since 1437, Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland, due to the safety guaranteed by the castle. In the 16th century, the Holyroodhouse Palace was built, and Mary Queen of Scots, also known as Mary Stuart, lived there during her reign.
The palace is the only official residence of the Scottish kings and the street between the castle and the palace is known as the Royal Mile.
This tour will take place in the old town of Edinburgh and also involves a first introduction to the castle on the Esplanade (the place where the Militaishe Tattoo takes place every August).
We will also see the higher part of the Royal Mile and the surroundings - the Grassmarket was the biggest market place in Scotland for more than 500 years and is a real treasure box of stories.
The Greyfriars Kirkyard (cemetary) is famous for the Covenanters who fought for religious freedom in the 17th century and for Greyfriars Bobby, the small dog who slept on the grave of his master.
On the Royal Mile itself we will see the St Giles Cathedral which was built around 1120 and the beautiful Parliament Hall which was the home of the parliament until 1707. The Mercat Cross just besides is still used for official announcements.
We walk through several closes for which the old town is famous.
I would do this tour again!!
The tour was okay. It would be helpful if there would be a short overview over the tour at the beginning. We booked a four-hour tour, but due to the small group, we were finished after 3 hours. That should be told to the group beforehand. Before we were allowed to visit the courthouse, one of our group members had to hand out his penknife - and never got it back. One could mention this beforehand so that you get the chance to deposit it (or the person would've waited in front of the building).
I can highly recommend this tour. Very humorous and people who are interested in history get their money's worth.
Unfortunately, our tour only lasted for 3 hours and our guide hadn't always regard for our group, for example when some us were exhausted and needed a short break. Besides that, it was very exciting, informative and a great way to get to know the city.
Everything worked out well.
Our German tour in Edinburgh was really great. I can only recommend John. Amazin!
Dressed tradtional Scottish, John guides very competently and entertainingly through Edniburgh. We were picked up from the hotel and even a shorthanded change of the starting time was no problem. Overall impression: Highly recommendable!
John did an excellent tour! Thank you again for that!
Anytime again, but only with John
We stayed in Edinburgh for the fourth time and thanks to John we explored some new things, you already passed as a "normal tourist" dozens of time without noticing. He wore a traditional kilt and was a very amusing, well informed & competent, personal guide. All together we bearded the weather and enjoyed the many sides of this city. The time flew by. Anytime again!! Thank you John!!
The given stars speak for themselves!
It was fabulous!
A really wonderful tour.
If you examine the topic of history a bit too often, it gives the group a feeling of a class trip - and I surely don't need that while on vacation.
Only recommendable! We were three couples and booked the tour guide only for our group, we didn't regret it and got a lot of insider knowledge.
Can be recommended.
We were a group of 9 men and the 4 hours were very entertaining and informative.
We had a very nice and informative tour through Edinburgh.
With John, we had a very competent guide who guided us through Edinburgh with charm and wit. Even our two childten, 9 and 13 years old, were very fond of this tour, even though it rained a lot!! Thank you, a highly recommendable tour!!
Mr Mackay is competent, intelligent and funny. All participants were vary satisfied.
The tour with John, who speaks an excellent German, was fabulous. The information he gave us were very varied. From geology to his favourite Fish'n'Chips restaurant, from the English princess to the Scottish enlighteners, from the Scottish independence to architecture and football - he knows just eveything. Only the rain was kind of disturbing....
The tour through the Old Town of Edinburgh was done by Mr Mackay. It was very interesting and entertaining, spiced up with his Scottish humour. Just great! Thank you. We will surely recommend you.
Wonderful, everything was perfect. Anytime again!
it was proffesionell, good, informative and witty
It was a very nice and informative tour with a very competent guide (John Mackay).
Everything was OK
A very good tour! High competence, flexibility and temporally admissions.
A great and competent tour. Absolutely recommendable.
The booked tour should have lasted four hours, but we did only two hours, because we only booked as a family. Last year, we did a similar tour in Rome and got a lot of insider information which I expected to get here as well. The tour was a reliable standard tour without anything that I could not find in a guide book as well. Explainations were only give on request and the kids, which I explicitly mentioned when I booked the tour, were pretty much overlooked. All in all, if asked if I would recommend it, I would say: yes and now. It depends on the expactations one has.
