Walking Tour Berlin Hansaviertel – “The city of tomorrow”

In compliance with the principles of modern urban development, the prior to WWII densely built-up Hansaviertel was reconstructed in the course of the International Building Exhibition (IBA) in 1957. Here, urban planners and architects initially put the structured and low-density city to an exemplary test.

The intitiators of IBA also thought of their project as a manifestation of the »undaunted will to expand West Berlin« and the efficiency of Western construction industry. Balancing, almost opposing the housing areas of the East Berlin Stalin-Allee (today Karl-Marx-Allee) – monumental and classical in style – was yet another deliberate aim of the project.

Exemplary for the style of post war modernism, the single-family homes, high-rise slab and point blocks – created by 53 architects from 13 countries – make the Hansaviertel a popular residential area until today. Its central location near the »City-West«, easy access to public transport, numerous green areas and the unconventional layouts of the apartments are responsible for the area’s still high residential amenity.

Just perfect: very friendly and professional guide with a huge amount of expert knowledge, who has a lot of anecdotes to tell. An exciting travel to "Hansa Quarter", which represents a piece of Bonn Architecture on the grounds of the old and new cpaital. Very recommendable!
