Daniel is a superb tour guide who will not only show you the rock hewn churches of Lalibela, he will reveal to you the history, symbolism, and secrets of these incredible clusters of ancient buildings. When he first told us that "the two clusters of churches were designed and built to represent earthly Jerusalem and heavenly Jerusalem" we had a glimpse into the masterclass that he was about to teach over the next two days. He clearly explains the themes each building represents and the symbolism and meaning of the different crosses, windows, and doors carved into the buildings. Daniel also introduces you to the intricate network of tunnels and trenches that interconnect the church buildings. One fascinating tunnel is the pitch dark tunnel that leads brave souls from "hell to heaven". Daniel is the son and grandson of Ethiopian Orthodox Priests, he is highly educated, and he clearly enjoys sharing the results of the vision of King Lalibela. As an older group we were not physically up for Daniel's more adventuresome tours. If you are into hiking and/or camping, talk with Daniel about his extended tours up into the mountains ...oh, to be young again!Daniel organized a 2 day 1 night tour ( actually 24 hours from arrival to departure ) for us in Lalibela. Daniel organized a 2 day 1 night tour ( actually 24 hours from arrival to departure ) for us in Lalibela. We booked the hotel by ourselves. And Daniel did the airport transfer and also showed around the rock hewn churches. Overall it is a pleasant trip. Everything was what we expected. Daniel lives there and almost knows everything there. His brother is still servicing in the church. So he really gave us quite a lot of information of these rock hewn churches Just talk to Daniel if you need someone to take you around in Lalibela.I found Daniel through prior reviews on trip advisor so I knew I had to come back to share my own experience. I found Daniel through prior reviews on trip advisor so I knew I had to come back to share my own experience. Background: 2 guys in our 30s in Addis for a month, taking a weekend trip to Lalibela. First of all, I HIGHLY recommend you go with a guide if you're not Ethiopian/Orthodox. You will be walking among the local people going about their lives in the market, church, town. You will want to be respectful and have a local guide let you know if something is OK (where to walk, when to take off your shoes, safety, picture taking, etc) Daniel responded to my inquiry email right away and was very upfront about what was included and the pricing, all of which was true. He organized our short stay in the best way possible so he picks you up from the airport, you get to see the Lalibela market on your way to your hotel on Saturday, see the amazing churches, and get personalized transportation and guided walks through the attractions. I could not have been happier with Dan's professionalism and level of knowledge re. his home town and the churches. I highly recommend going with him if you are planning a trip to this region of Ethiopia. Thanks Dan!! ps. we saw several large groups which were following a single guide. The churches are small inside and pathways are very narrow so I suggest not having more than 5 people per guide if possible.O Dan é o melhor guia de Lalibella. Danny and his colleague, the driver were excellent. They were punctual and thorough in their job. Danny and his colleague, the driver were excellent. They were punctual and thorough in their job. Danny is extremely knowledgeable and was fantastic as a tour guide. He knew the history on the back of his hands. What I really liked was that he would share the religious as well as archaeological histories and stories related to the churches and the traditions associated with them. He was also thoughtful in his guiding work, and was mindful to walk slowly as I had breathlessness due to long COVID, and kept checking in with me. He also gently suggested tips for other people who were poorer and worked in the church for helping us out during the tour, which I found very helpful as I could be a better visitor. Danny took care of arranging my transport, accomodation, restaurants for meals, and took me for buying souvenirs etc. The hotel recommended by him, Harbe Hotel, and the restaurant were very good. The breakfast at Harbe Hotel was particularly good. I would very strongly recommend hiring Danny if you visit Lalibela. You will have a rich and great experience visiting a beautiful and very underrated place with a very knowledgeable and nice person.Had an amazing trip with Daniel a few weeks ago. The Lalibela churches were even more spectacular than I imagined and Daniel’s knowledge and expertise greatly enhanced our experience. Lalibela is back in business.
