The Arco dei Gavi was built in the 1st century A.D. by the gens Gavia, a noble Roman family who had their hometown in Verona, on the Via Postumia, the Roman road leading to the city.

Stop At: Museo di Castelvecchio, Corso Castelvecchio 2, 37121, Verona Italy
The museum (museum visit not included in this tour) is located in the Castelvecchio castle one of the most prominent examples of Gothic architecture of the age. It has seven towers, a superelevated keep with some buildings inside. The castle is surrounded by a ditch, now dry.

The Castelvecchio Bridge also known as the Verona’s Scaliger Bridge connects the Verona’s medieval castle to the Adige’s left bank. The Castelvecchio Bridge has always been magnificent, and a daring accomplishment of architecture up to this modern day with over 48 meters of arch indulging the currents, followed by two smaller ones that are 24 and 29 meters.

Piazza Bra is the largest piazza in Verona. The piazza is lined with numerous cafés and restaurants, along with several notable buildings. The Verona Arena, an amphitheatre built nearly 2000 years ago, is now a world-famous music venue with regular operatic and contemporary music performances. Verona's town hall, the Palazzo Barbieri, also looks out across the piazza.

The building itself was built in the first century AD on a site then beyond the city walls. The ludi (shows and games) staged there were so famous that spectators came from many other places, often far away, to witness them. While it can now host crowds of up to 22, 000, the original amphitheatre could seat 30, 000 spectators (visit inside the arena not included in this tour)

Stop At: Via Mazzini, Verona Italy
In order to reach some remains of the Roman city wall we have to walk along a short stretch of Via Mazzini. This street forms a direct connection between Piazza Brà and Piazza delle Erbe. The street is also the largest pedestrian area of Verona and one of the busiest streets of the city. Row upon row of shops line the road, and large crowds of tourists amble from window to window.

The Porta Borsari is an ancient Roman gate that was built in the 1st century AD. It was formerly called the Porta Lovia and the Porta San Zeno before receiving its current name. The gate served as a passageway for the Roman Via Postumia.

Piazza delle Erbe was once the town's forum during the time of the Roman Empire and transformed into the fruit and vegetal market in medieval time. On the square you can admire the ancient town hall, the Torre dei Lamberti, the frescoed Mazzanti Houses. The Baroque Palazzo Maffei, decorated by statues of Greek gods. It is faced by a white marble column, on which is St. Mark's Lion, symbol of the Republic of Venice.
The north-western side occupies the site of the ancient Roman Capitol Hill, which looked towards the forum. Numerous of its buildings facing the square have maintained façade frescoes. On the southern side is the crenellated Casa dei Mercanti ("House of the Merchants", also known as Domus Mercatorum), now the seat of the Banca Popolare di Verona. Other buildings, the tall houses of the Ghetto, are reminiscent of medieval tower-houses.

Piazza dei Signori became Verona’s centre of power in the Middle Ages. Around the beautiful square all important main buildings of the former city government, including the court and the seat of power of the Scaliger family, are located. A large statue to the famous Italian poet Dante Alighieri has dominated the square since 1865 and gave the square the nickname “Piazza Dante”.
