Sophia was the instructor/host and doesn’t speak English. Kalinka Zerva was our driver, guide, and translator for the course of the tour. Everything was very easy to make as Sophia is an excellent teacher. Everything is very fresh and most if not everything was from her garden. Locally sourced items. While a lot of homes are abandoned and run down it still gives the village a wonderful charm. Vatos village only has about 10 people who live there and is quite the distance from Heraklion. We felt the distance was worth the travel and tasty food. We made cheese pies served with honey, tzatziki, and stuffed vegetables. Sophia also went the distance and made a Greek salad, fresh bread, and lamb. Everything tasted amazing. Kalinka, also took us the scenic way there so we could see the many beaches along the way and gave us a bit of the history and landscape of Crete along the way. She is very knowledgeable of Greece in general and willing to explain everything and answer all of your questions. She’s very accommodating. Sophia’s garden hosted: almonds, figs, grapes, and apples. She also grew mint, parsley, and dill from what I saw. We couldn’t try her fruit as it isn’t in season yet. Note: - We went in June which was 75 degrees in the mountains. Normally this weather is fairly comfortable for me but it was extremely hot - Make sure your clothing is breathable and light - Wear comfortable shoes since you’ll be standing to prepare and cook. - We did everything in Sophia’s fully equipped outdoor kitchen - Kalinka, may take you for a walk around the village - Winding roads to the locationWe had a wonderful day at our private cooking class in the mountains near Vatos. We had a wonderful day at our private cooking class in the mountains near Vatos. Our driver, Haris, acted as tour guide as we drove from outside of Heraklion up into the mountains. It was a long trip, but we got to see more of Crete on the way. When we arrived at Eva's, we had refreshments and got to know each other. We then started cooking in her wonderful open-air kitchen/dining room overlooking the valley. We made tzatziki, Cretan pies, stuffed tomatoes and peppers, etc. As Eva finished up the cooking, Haris gave us a tour of the village. We then enjoyed the fruits of our labours, and it was wonderful! On the way back to our hotel, Haris stopped to show us some sights. We felt that we had an authentic Greek experience, and we're still enjoying some of our parting gifts from Eva.
