The Killing Field and Toul Sleng Genocide Museum (S21) Tour
Overview
killing fields of Choeung Ek Genocide Center – 9 miles away south of Phnom Penh. The infamous killing fields have a bloody history. Once an orchard and a
Chinese cemetery, the Khmer Rouge, lead by Pol Pot, turned the place into
what became known as the killing fields, where they executed around 20.000 victim. Over three years they massacred and
buried 2.5 million people. After remembering the dead, return to Phnom Penh to visit Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S21). Meaning hill of the poisonous trees, Pol Pot turned a once popular
high school into a high security prison. 20, 000 people were imprisoned
there, many of whom were tortured for information. Today it serves as a
museum and a reminder of darker days.

Visal Sem was our guide for the trip and we had a great driver whose name we didn’t catch. Visal was helpful and informative throughout the trip. He showed a great depth of both knowledge and opinion in the difficult and harrowing subject. It was excellent to have him all to ourselves so that we could constantly ask questions. It was about the right amount of time, detailed but enough to do something else more uplifting afterwards. We highly recommend this tour.My guide was able to give me a full history of the Khmer Rouge and the circumstances that led to their rise on the drive to the killing Fields. My guide was able to give me a full history of the Khmer Rouge and the circumstances that led to their rise on the drive to the killing Fields. She was well informed on the history, and so was to give a great overview, while also sharing stories of people who went through it, and the attitudes of the people at the time. The things I saw in both the killing Fields and the S21 prison had so much more impact because I knew the history behind them, and how these horrifying things happened. She was able to share details of the genocide that I would have never heard otherwise. I couldn't recommend this tour enough. This tour is a MUST if you are visiting Phnom Penh and should definitely be top of your list of things to do. This tour is a MUST if you are visiting Phnom Penh and should definitely be top of your list of things to do. I am so grateful that I chose this particular company for my visit to The Killing Field ('Choeung Ek') and S-21 prison ('Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum'). My guide for the tour was 'Baboon' and he was a wealth of knowledge and happy to answer all questions that I had (related to the tour or otherwise). Couldn't have asked for a better human to guide me through the day. From pick-up to drop-off, Baboon took great care, compassion, and empathy in sharing with me what was such an utterly horrific series of events in his country's history. Echoing other reviews here already -- incredibly sobering, heart-breaking, incredulous, eye-opening and upsetting in so many parts BUT so immensely important to learn about. I can't even begin to fathom the amount of trauma this has caused in individual lives and on the national scale. Please book this tour and, if you meet some of the survivors, please support them if you're able to. I cannot recommend this company and tour enough. Deeply grateful for the experience. I went solo this time, but I shall be back and will bring family/friends with me on my next trip. Thank you so much to Baboon and also to our driver, Mr. Dara. Our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable about the Khmer Rouge and easily answered any questions we had in detail. Very friendly man and you could see he was so happy to back doing tours again after covid. Would highly recommend!

Incredibly interesting and informative although eye opening and heart breaking at the same time. The guide was amazingly knowledgeable about the genocide and like many Cambodias had personal family trauma as a result of this period in time. We were fortunate enough to have a mini tour of s21 from one of the very few survivors of the prison which brought me to tears as he described what he and his fellow prisoners endured. I would highly recommend that everyone take this tour when in Cambodia as it allows you to have a greater understanding of the Cambodian culture and very recent history.
