We worked in an outdoor covered kitchen in teams of two. We were taught to prepare ELEVEN different dishes, and were able to adapt them to our personal tastes as far as spicey heat was concerned. Our teacher was so patient and even managed to take pictures for us along the way!! The evening culminated in a dinner together enjoying all our personal dishes. Prior to leaving we were gifted a cookbook containing all we'd cooked and a green or red curry packet. Highly recommended
I talked my husband and two children (ages 14 and 17) into doing this and we were not disappointed! We did the afternoon class and were picked up on time and taken to the kitchen. Niti was wonderful! She was extremely knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful to everyone there. She answered questions and gave us a lot of fun cultural information. Both of my children (girl and boy) enjoyed the experience and my husband could not stop talking about how pleasantly surprised he was. We were absolutely stuffed by the end so don't eat at all before you go! We were given spices and a recipe book at the end and will put them to good use when we get back to the States. We would highly recommend this class to everyone! The price is amazing for all of the things you get and we will cherish the memories! Thank you so much for making our stay in Chiang Mai even more fun!
It was such an exciting experience to cook and taste the recipes taught by the nice and fun lady. Even after more than years, I still remember the night when I took this class. Fun, fun, Fun!
We had a great time cooking! The food was tasty and the team was friendly and helpful.
This tour was amazing!
We had A group of 7 and we had a blast!!! The food was amazing and I leaned new cooking techniques! JJ was very patient and knowledgeable about the dishes and the Akha culture. Definitely a must do in Chiang Mai! You prepare 11 dishes so come hungry and wear comfortable shoes!
This is a brilliant thing to do in Chag Mai. This is the best place to go as JJ is brilliant at what he does and makes it so easy to learn, even for children. The visit to the market in the morning to get your ingredients is very informative.
We had a great time in this class. We made 11 dishes although not all from scratch with some pre chopping already done but we really enjoyed the social aspect of this cooking course. The food was also really tasty. This was one of the best evenings we had during our 3 week trip around Asia.
This is a must when visiting Chiang Mai! My boyfriend and I had such a great day visiting the local market first then onto the kitchen to cook so many different dishes! Make sure you have an empty tummy when arrive! :)
Had a great day cooking and laughing. We got an inside look at Thai food by going to the market where locals shop. The instructors imparted so much information to us about Thai culture, food, and family. I was impressed with how organized they were as we were a group of 11 and could choose different dishes to prepare total of 11 dishes. There was no waiting just chopping, pounding, and cooking and then so much food to eat. Fantastic day!
This was one of the highlights of my trip to Chiang Mai. I did the morning session, which included a market tour (well worth it)
The class was very organized, Niti (the instructor) was incredible and explained everything perfectly.
We covered 11 dishes in the class. Great value for the cost.
This was one of my favorite things I did in Chang Mai! The class was so well organized and Niti and her staff were awesome. We had a great time and made some wonderful food. Niti made it feel easy and shared her Ahka culture and stories with us. I learned so much and made friends with the other chefs from many different countries. Sharing our meal together at the end was wonderful and a great way to wrap up the evening, We all got a cookbook and packaged spices to take home. Loved this experience so much!
We had a wonderful experience at the Thai/Akha Cooking class, Our instructor made the evening entertaining, as well as educational for our group of 10. The ride to the cooking school added to the fun, as we got to know our fellow chefs. There was so much food, and our guide made sure to include everyone in the preparation, I would highly recommend this cooking class to anyone visiting Chiang Mai.
This was a great day learning the skills to be able to produce a perfect Thai meal to wow your friends.
We started by travelling to the fruit and veg market where JJ introduced us to the new and exciting fruit and vegetables used in Thai cooking.
We then returned to the cook school for a coffee and apron in preperation for starting the cooking. The kitchen is in a u shape which allows everyone a view of the teacher JJ as he took us through the different recipes. Everyone has choices in what they cook, and JJ manages to keep on top of everyones efforts to make sure you dont go wrong.
A really fun experience in professional surroundings with a teacher who really knows his stuff and great back-up staff.
Thoroughly recommend this for a fun day.
This class was so wonderful and genuine, it made my heart smile! Between the market tour, the patience for teaching, and the time at the end to sit down to a nice meal with new friends, it was just what the doctor ordered. The best part is that you learn some healthy, delicious, and easy new meals that are full of flavor - and you get to keep a cook book! I would recommend this a thousand times to anyone and everyone.
Off the beaten path. Group of 6. Well prepared.
What a great night! Met so many new friends, the cooking was fun, the food - delicious, and Sherry the instructor was excellent. Highly recommend!!!
Definitely one of our favorite things on our trip. The class was great for different skill levels, and we would suggest taking the earlier class if possible for the market tour.
A wonderful experience. Loved the visit to the market for fresh produce. Enjoyed some delicious dishes while expanding my cooking skills. Definitely would recommend
Had a great time cooking, this was a highlight of our trip.
Excellent! If you are a Thai food lover, or would like to explore Thai and Akha cooking, this is the best introduction. I would highly recommend the morning class, as you get to explore the local market and before starting the cooking class.
Brilliant experience. A must for anybody visiting Chiang Mai.
This cooking class was a really fun day. Our guide and instructor Cherry, was full of interesting information and tips, from showing us unusual ingredients at the local market, to concise instructions on the preparation and cooking of all the dishes. All dishes were delicious and surprisingly easy. The cook book that we received is well written and will become a well used favourite. I would highly recommend this cooking school.
I cannot say enough good things about this class!! It is family run and truly cares deeps about the Akha tradition and keeping their recipes and culture alive! I would suggest booking the morning class because the walking tour of the market was one of the best parts. We shopped for all of our ingredients and were instructed on how to pick the best and freshest bunches, what each plant and veggie was and what dishes they were used for. We went through fish, meat, veggies, flowers, every kind of stall you could think of. Whenever we wanted to try something, anything at all, our instructor stopped and bought us a sample and we all got to eat it! We left with 4-5 samples, including things I never would have been brave enough to try on my own... century egg anyone? Once back at the school we were set up in a lovely outdoor kitchen and we walked through A TON of different dishes, both traditional Thai and Akha. We had soups, salads, fried spring rolls, curries, noodles and dessert. We honestly had so much food it was hard to eat it all! but we found a way. I can't rave enough about how wonderful this experience was and how much we learned. We also got a complete cookbook to take home with us and our own bag of curry spices : One of the best days we spent in Chiang Mai!
