Four of us old-timers stayed five nights at the Hotel La Ceiba in Chiapa de Corzo, a very old and interesting community by the river. On the second day we took a cab to the marina and bought tickets for the river cruise that takes you into the Sumidero Canyon. The canyon itself is the most impressive that I have seen. The cruise takes about 4 hours and it takes you from the marina to the dam and back. On the way you get to see spider monkeys and alligators in the wild and you get to appreciate the vertical walls of the canyon which are up to one kilometer high in places. The cruise boats are totally open boats which can carry about ten persons. Be sure to take water and a good sunscreen, because the sun can do some damage over a four hour period. The river cruise is a must if you are in the area. Very enjoyable all the way around. While my hosts were really excited about this boat ride, I was reluctant. Needless to say, bring plenty of water, sunscreen and a hat, and you're all set for some of the most unexpected breathtaking views from bottom of water carved canyons. The Sumidero canyon is beautiful and should be on everyone's itinerary if you are in Tuxtla or San Cristobal. The boat ride was good. We did not understand any of the explanations as we don't follow Spanish. That said we enjoyed the views. The return trip in the van from Sumidero to San Cristobal was a disaster. There was a communication failure between Viator, Ecoexperiencias and the van driver. Before getting into the van CONFIRM the trip itinerary and whether the guide can speak English. We had booked a 1/2 day trip to Sumidero and Corzo with a guide in English. Firstly the van driver did not know English. After Corzo we realized that 1/2 the folks in the van were on a full day itinerary to visit Sumidero, Corzo and 2 View points of the canyon and a 90 mins break for lunch. Through difficult communication we got the van driver to arrange for alternate mode of transportation that arrived at 4.00 PM. Our trip was supposed to end in San Cristobal at 2.30, but ended at 5.00 PM. Before boarding the van CONFIRM the itinerary and that the driver knows English. This was an amazing tour! 2 hours long on boat to the end of the canyon. This was an amazing tour! 2 hours long on boat to the end of the canyon. I took a 2 year old and he slept most of the way. We saw crocodiles up close and monkeys. Our boat tour guide got us under the xmas tree and enjoyed the waterfall. I highly recommend this instead of overlooking the canyon tour. No pee stops so consider that. It's a beautiful canyon and more accessible than many of the other sites in the area, the boats move fast and the trip is well worth it, the aqua-oxxo stop at the deepest part of the trip is probably the only down side.

Pickup was fine. Our guide spoke excellent English (and fellow travelers as well). Our guide explained everything to us before the boat trip so we would have some idea of what was happening since the boat driver spoke no English. The canyon was spectacular. All good.
