Srinagar Heritage Walking Tour
Overview
Srinagar is a city of unparalleled beauty and heritage, and the best way to explore it is by walking though its street and lanes. Almost every street corner will surprise you with something new and wonderful. If you have a few days to spend in Srinagar, I would recommend walking through these streets.

The heritage walk conducted by Usman Ji is superbly amazing and so enlightening. He is knowledgeable person, who is well aware of the history of Kashmir and is ready to answer all your queries regarding the same. I was a solo female traveler and wanted to visit the offbeat spaces in Kashmir and he planned it extremely well. The hotels that were arranged were safe and hygienic. For the starters, we began with the heritage walk around Srinagar including the old town. He shows Srinagar like no one else. We had Nadru pakoda, local mithai of Kashmir filled with dry fruits, after visiting Shah-e-Hamdan Shrine. He also took me to a shop which was preparing the local delicacy Harissa and explained the process involved in its making. If you are a history buff, nature lover, and ready to accept the beauty of place without any biases, please please visit Kashmir. Only after visiting the place, you will start feeling the Kashmir we see in media is way different from what we see in real life. It's so lively, hospitable and welcoming.Had read about Kashmir Walks tripadvisor and reached out to Mr. Usman through the phone numbers present, while we were waiting in the Delhi airport for our Srinagar flight. Had read about Kashmir Walks tripadvisor and reached out to Mr. Usman through the phone numbers present, while we were waiting in the Delhi airport for our Srinagar flight. The initial call itself, was a very warm experience. He listened to our ask and gave good suggestions. Queries asked were responded immediately, and before catching our flight o Srinagar (approx. 2 hrs), we had all the information to decide on whether to go on the walk or not. We were a group of 4 friends travelling and very much interested in knowing about the history of srinagar and wanted to have a very immersive experience. And the tour was just that. The day we arrived in Srinagar, other than the walking tour, we had other queries also on day tours etc. Usman was very helpful, giving us guidance on - what is good at this time of year (December) and what is just a sales pitch by other agents. This really helped us decide our plan for Srinagar. We had signed up for the heritage tour but along with it he gave a free crafts safari also. We had actually had him booked for half a day, but he spent the whole day taking us first for the Srinagar crafts safari and then the heritage tour. In Crafts safari we visited a nation award winning workshops and stores for: Pashmina - where we heard from the artisans how pashmina is made and then the beautiful embroidery Sozni is done. We also visited another workshop, where specialized artisans are present for pashmina related repair work Paper mache - we visited 2 workshops, where first we saw how the base for paper mache is prepared and then another national award winning store - where kalamkari work is done. After Crafts safari, we went to Adoos for lunch. A 100 yr old kashmir restraunt, where we feasted on delicious kashmiri affair. Usman joined us and help order the right kashmiri dishes to give the authentic kashmiri food experience. Usman treated us to Kashmir's famous walnut fudge at Adoos bakery. Post lunch we started on the heritage walking tour. We started with the Jama Masjid, walked through the old lanes of Srinagar, saw old houses, copper and nickel workshops , zardozi workshops, cemetery and finally end our tour with some street food near Shah E Hamdan and then a tour of Shah E Hamdan. All in all, it was beautiful day and a great start to our trip of Kashmir. Thank you Usman for great tour. It not only showed us the real Srinagar, believe also its people. Absolutely recommend Usman and team for Srinagar. The tour arranged by Usman will not only create great memories, but also bring a good friend in Usman.I had done the craft and culinary walks with Usman of Kashmiri Walks. I had done the craft and culinary walks with Usman of Kashmiri Walks. He gave a real insightful journey on Kashmir’s rich craft and culinary heritage. The craft walk in Srinagar takes you to pashmina, kani and jamawar artisan, papier mache and walnut carving workshops wherein you shall watch each artisan create the delicate art in its various stages of the process and would also hear tales of its origin from the last generation of community carrying on. The culinary tour was a run through on the old bakeries and breakfast staples that are connected to Kashmiri culinary fabric. Even sampling Wazwan from a 5th generation waza was an experience in itself ! A must-go when in Kashmir! Was a lovely 2 hour journey through the eyes of a local Kashmiri and enthusiastic Usman who was my guide for the heritage walk. Was a lovely 2 hour journey through the eyes of a local Kashmiri and enthusiastic Usman who was my guide for the heritage walk. Through this journey you'll visit places that are centuries old which speak to you through its existence. You have to experience this to see a side of Srinagar and Kashmir which one won't experience anywhere else. Thanks a lot for the beautiful experience and also ending it with the Kulfi which was literally the cherry on the cake. Keep up the great job.I would wholeheartedly recommend everyone who's visiting Srinagar to contact Usman and his team for arranging a heritage walk. I and my parents (who are in their 60's) had planned a 16-day trip to major destinations in Kashmir. I found Kashmir Walks through their Instagram page and initially was interested in only booking some heritage and craft walks with them. But then Mr. Usman from Kashmir Walks was kind enough to help prepare the entire itinerary for our 16 day trip. Though initially hesitant, I took up the offer and honestly, I and my parents were not at all disappointed with the arrangements made by Mr. Usman and his team. He helped us get accommodation & travel arrangements across all our destinations (Srinagar, Pahalgam, Gulmarg and Sonmarg) to ensure that all three of us had a hassle-free and an unforgetful experience of Kashmir. Mentioning some highlights of the three walks that Mr. Usman personally conducted for us: 1. Craft Tour: This was a day-long tour, where we got to visit the families that have been carrying out the intricate and generations-long craft of Pashmina Kani weavers and see for ourself the hard-work that goes into creating a few meters of delicately weaved pashmina fabric. We also later visited a master craftsman who has been nationally awarded for his contributions towards Paper Mache, another laborious and highly skilled art form. All the families welcomed us very warmly to their homes & art and we got a first-hand experience of the warmth that Kashmiris are known for. 2. Impromptu Food Walk: This was right after the Craft Tour and we found ourselves in the bustling market of Hazrat Bal. It was not planned at all and honestly, this was my favourite part of the entire trip. Mr. Usman would get us a sample of all the delicious street food items, all the while also explaining us about them. We also got to explore the market on our own and got to interact with Kashmiris around. 3. Heritage Walk: We started with Jamia Masjid and words fail me to explain the beauty of the entire structure. Everyone is welcome inside the premises (even non-muslims) and it is a great example of the syncretic architecture that Kashmir is famous for (with influences from Buddhism, Hinduism and Islam). We went about exploring the old city and also got to see how the familiar markets in Srinagar (for spices, wedding materials, copper and textiles) evolved. Mr. Usman was also gracious to guide us to a cafe that I wanted to visit and we had the local Noon-chai. Some of the mosques and structures that we visited, invoked a deep Sufi connection. Overall, these were the best 16 days that we could have spent anywhere and with Mr. Usman on our side, we are glad we could experience the Heaven on Earth, that Kashmir is, in its most beautiful form. Mr. Usman himself is a great personality and comes from a highly educated family of doctors. I will always remember the deep conversations we had at Shalimar Garden while the sun gradually set into the night.
