What an amazing selection of tours to fill a perfect day! First, the weather was absolutely perfect which offered amazing views from the Eagles Nest and Bavarian Alps. Our guide, Walter, was an excellent narrator and story teller and had such a great sense of humor. Moving from one aspect of the tours to the next event was seamless. We had plenty of time to have lunch and shop in Berchtesgaden. The salt mine tour was incredible with an awesome train deep into the mine and also two super fun slides miners use to get down many levels of the mine. We even road a boat across a clear under ground lake. This really is a great tour that should not be missed. This was an excellent tour of the region, well organised and friendly knowledgable guide. Great way to get to see an amazing amount of history and beauty if you’ve not a lot of time in the area. Wolter was our guide and he provided history all along the trip from Salzburg, out to the locations and back. First stop* was The Eagle’s Nest outside of Berchtesgaden. Unfortunately the weather didn’t cooperate - but that’s the way it goes…Wolter was kind enough to air-drop the nicer pictures I’m including against the reality of a very rainy August that the area has had this year. The schedule is tight, but provides enough time to go around and see the sights. The facility is now a restaurant and you may have to suspend that reality to see the rooms without dining tables and other items. There is a sun room area that has an exhibition covering construction through preservation. It includes both history and personalities from the time of Nazi Germany - but this will be the extent of any exhibits or evidence of what happened there between 1938-1945. While outside wasn’t great for us - same as with the restaurant - we had to imagine what we’d normally see on a day with a clear blue sky. Second stop* was Berchtesgaden for lunch - we stopped at The Golden Bar as recommended by Volter - the menus are only in German; but given the weather the Goulash & Sausage & Lentils went well with some Beer/Tea & Pretzels. Like many restaurants we’ve seen along the way - they have blankets on hand should you be cold. The town is great for gift shopping (or rain jacket shopping - I found a nice Regatta jacket Sport Babel to replace one I lost/left somewhere between Nuremberg & Munich.). Third stop* was The Salt Mines - If you’re interested in such things - you’ll like this. They’ll provide audio guides for non-German speakers and it was good; but I’d not repeat it and after going - if I was given the option of staying longer at any of the other three stops - I’d opt for that though I don’t think that’s really an option on the tour we purchased. Last stop* was Koenigsee - one word captures it…STUNNING. This area of Austria and Germany is AMAZING from a scenic and hiking perspective - if you’re in reasonable shape for a 40 min hike that’ll go about 100-150 feet above the lake…then dip back down as it winds along the southern shore. From the car park - head straight down to the lake, head left, and follow along the lake till you hit the trail and begin walking up. Stay on the main trail and when it splits right and down or left and up - head right and down to Painter’s Corner where some of my pictures were taken. As I said - every picture…every turn…every change of light or the clouds created a STUNNING view and picture. Even if you used this tour to determine where you want to come back to next time…very well worth it!Be prepared for bad weather. I came here in August hoping to avoid weather like that, but it rained and was cloudy. Other than that, it was a great experience.
