We booked a tour of Priorat which not many realise is one of Spain’s top wine regions. Meritxell was a pleasant and informative guide who we have no hesitation in recommending – she arrived promptly at the agreed time outside our hotel in Calafell. In the morning we visited an interesting wine co-op in Falset, then an olive oil producer, on to lunch and finally a family run winery in Porrera. Meritxell did a great job of arranging a last minute substitute visit when Marco Abella let us down (not her fault). We thoroughly enjoyed our day.Our day with El Brogit in the Priorat region was a highlight of our week in Catalonia. Our day with El Brogit in the Priorat region was a highlight of our week in Catalonia. We visited the Carthusian monastery in Escaladei, enjoyed a wine tasting and tour at Scala Dei winery, and an olive oil tasting -- including fantastic homemade local foods -- at El Moli d'Oli farm shop. The result was a chance to learn more deeply about the Priorat and to sit and talk with local producers. It was also a delight to see the stunningly beautiful countryside as a passenger! Meritxell was a cheerful, informative and engaging guide, offering historical and cultural insights unavailable to us otherwise. Her English is excellent and she provided perspectives that only someone from the region could offer. Logistics were easy - Meritxell customized the day around our interests, and picked us up from our apartment in Tarragona. A very special day - very highly recommended! What was intended to be an introduction to Priorat and Montsant wines turned out to be a deep-dive into the heart and soul of a magnificent region and the art of wine-making - seen through the "terroir" and tasted through the fruits of the land. What was intended to be an introduction to Priorat and Montsant wines turned out to be a deep-dive into the heart and soul of a magnificent region and the art of wine-making - seen through the "terroir" and tasted through the fruits of the land. Meritxell was the perfect guide - planning a near-bespoke tour for us, showing what makes Priorat and its wines stand out, and driving us around for the best views of the region. We spent two nights in the Priorat Region and were totally captivated by this very charismatic but largely unknown region. The scenery is nothing short of spectacular. We spent a day and a half in the company of the delightful Maritxella and Josep on two different excursions (even the meaning of El Brogit is somehow magical. There is no English word to translate it). On the first afternoon Josep picked us up from Marca-Falset station (two hours train ride South of Barcelona) and took us on a 4 to 5km walk around the hills overlooking the beautiful town of Grattallops. The bird life was abundant and Josep showed us many wild herbs. The area is peaceful, unspoiled and so so beautiful. The next day we drove to a Carthusian monastery in Scala Dei and set out on a 4k walk up to the cliff face. Again the views were wonderful. The monastery is well worth a visit. We then sat down to a delicious 3 course lunch with wine bread and water for a staggering €9 followed by a wine tasting of the Priorat wines which have become firm favourites of ours. Move over Rioja! I thoroughly recommend El Brogit and would definitely return to do more walks in this very special area of Catalonia. Thank you so much for a truly enjoyable trip.If you are on holiday on the Costa Daurada and love wine then a visit to the amazing Priorat region is a must. If you are on holiday on the Costa Daurada and love wine then a visit to the amazing Priorat region is a must. The wines are superb and world renowned and Priorat is only an hour or so from the coast. However, public transport is almost non-existent and a hire car would be hard work in this very rugged mountainous region. So what can you do? We found the perfect answer. My wife and I travelled with the delightful Meritxell of the "El Brogit" Ecotourism company. We were picked up at our hotel in Cambrils and set off over the mountains to the trendy wine D.O. of Montsant which surrounds Priorat. Our stop was in Cornudella de Montsant at the Baronia de Montsant Bodega. Our hostess was the charming and very knowledgeable Laura. The wines were superb and a number had won Decanter World Wines Awards. Then it was more amazing mountain scenery as we made our way to the famous Carthusam monastery of d'Escaladei. This was the priory that gave its name to the region. The setting was truly inspiring. A short drive through very classy vineyards brought us to Priorat's most famous winery, the Cellers Scala Dei. Before Priorat's fairly recent expansion and elevation to world class status, the region was known for this winery alone. The wines displayed the depth, intensity and elegance which make Priorat so special. Lunch was then taken in a restaurant, serving typical Catalan food and wine, in the pretty village square. More fabulous scenery as we headed to the Consolacio Chapel of Gratallops. This involved a steep winding climb up the mountainside through the world illustrious Ermita vineyard of Alvaro Palacios. The wines from this vineyard sell for £600 a bottle. The climb was rewarded by fantastic views of the surrounding countryside and an opportunity to examine closely the famous Licorella slate soil which gives the wines their power and intensity, and vines that produce only about two pounds of grapes per bush. The final stop was in the village of Gratallops itself and was the very small but lively Davinssi Bodega,. Meritxell is very passionate about the Catalunyan countryside, people and culture and had so much of interest to show us and tell us throughout the day. It was a pleasure to spend time with her. Priorat is the most spectacular and fascinating of the many wine regions we have visited, and this was an ideal way to see it. Thanks Meritxell. If you are on the Costa Daurada and are interested in wine then you must visit the highly regarded but not very accessible Montsant and Priorat regions.
