Stop At: Village of Lindos, Lindos Rhodes, Greece Greece
Lindos is for most visitors the most impressive archaeological site on Rhodes. The dramatic natural landscape is enhanced by the picturesque quality of the more modern town, with the Lindos Acropolis rising dominantly on a steep cliff at 116 m height like a sovereign podium overlooking the sea, framed by mighty fortress walls.
Duration: 2 hours
Pass By: The Church of the Panagia, Lindos 851 07 Greece
Just off the main square in Lindos, this cross-shaped 14th century church has an octagonal dome and whitewashed walls. Its dark interior, with a black and white pebbled floor, is decorated with eighteenth-century frescoes of male saints on the right and female on the left. An inscription notes that additions were made to the building in 1489-90.
Stop At: Acropolis of Lindos, Lindos 851 07 Greece
On the summit of the Lindos Acropolis are the ruins of the goddess Athena Lindia, temples from the 4th century BC As well as the Propylaea, the great Hellenistic Stoa and the Byzantine chapel of Saint John. In the time of the Knights of St. John, the castle is surrounded by sturdier fortress walls while the flowering period of Lindos extends as a naval power up to the 19th century.
According to myth, the cult of Athena Lindia was pre-Hellenic, although this is not borne out by the sporadic excavation finds. The history of the sanctuary begins in the Geometric period (9th c. BC). In the Archaoc period the tyrant of Lindos, Kleoboulos, revived the cult and built a temple, probably on the site of an earlier one. The Archaic temple had the same Doric tetrastyle amphiprostyle plan as the subsequent one.

Great guide - tremendous local knowledge and fantastic English. Went during offseason so not much happening at the village but there were no crowds and the acropolis was fascinating.

After having read the tourist descriptions of Lindos, we had high expectations of an enjoyable day in Lindos. Our priority was to visit the Acropolis and it was there that we started our day. After climbing up halfway, we were somewhat taken aback by the cost of entrance to the site - 12 Euros - and for that, we were not given any plan or description of the site, just an entrance ticket. We are an elderly couple and anyone can see that we fit into the category of 'senior'. However, we were told that we could only get the normal discount for seniors, if we could prove our ages with our passports, which we did not have on our persons at the time (previously, we had spent several days in Rhodes city and for a cost of 10 Euros we were able to visit four important places, with no questions asked about proving our ages). Our disappointment on the Acropolis of Lindos was increased when we reach the site. It's true, the views from the top are wonderful (but they can be experienced from lower down), but the reconstruction of the site was of poor quality and certainly the site was not worth the entrance fee. In the town, we had to buy a drink in order to visit the Captian's House, because it's in a cafe. On the other hand, entrance to the Church of Our Lady of Lindos is free and the frescoes are impressive. This visit provided us with some compensation for what was otherwise a disappointing day - we would have been better off spending another day in Rhodes city, which we thoroughly enjoyed.

Total disappointment. This is more about the local vendor Rhodian Tours than Viator but Viator picked them. We booked this private tour because it was totally customizable. We wanted to add time to the tour so we could add a stop at the town where our grandparents were from. We understood there would be an additional cost. Two weeks before the tour we sent a detailed e-mail explaining what we were looking to do and providing contact information. These were the instructions given by Viator on how to customize the tour. Day before the tour we had not heard from anyone. We had also previously called and left a message. We finally spoke with someone at the vendors office who had no clue. Later in the day we got a call back and were told when they would pick us up and that we could go to the town we wanted to go to. When our tour guide Maria showed up her and the van smelled like smoke and she had absolutely no plan for us. When asked about the email we sent her the response was I dont read my emails. They drove us to the town we wanted to visit but we basically just drove around aimlessly. She talked constantly as if we were not even there. We then went to Lindos and essentially ran through the town because she needed to get back for another tour. There was no ability to extend the tour because she had not taken that into consideration. Our tour was 4 hours with at least 2 hours just driving around. We paid for a private customizable tour. We got a ride from our hotel to Lindos and back. Would not use them again. On the other hand Viator booked us with another tour company- Rhode Trip- for a different tour and they were fabulous. Lesson learned- ask who the local vendor is and check them out.
