The Pompeii Ruins were very interesting and the guide was informative. Would not want to tour the Ruins without a knowledgeable guide. Vesuvius was amazing - The last hour walk up to the crater was a nice workout and afforded us beautiful sites from the mountain.
The car that picked us up was clean and the driver courteous - we went to Pompeii first and had 2 hours guided around by Lucia. Lucia made the whole site come alive - she was enthusiastic and clear and knowledgeable. We got back in the car to go tp the car park at Vesuvius ready to walk up the final section. It would have been great to either have been taken to somewhere to eat/pick up some food or been told to bring some food with us. I had a banana between pick up at 9am and drop off at 4pm. There is a small café for drinks/chocs/crisps on Vesuvius but not really sufficient for the exertion/length of the day. Did not connect with a guide at the top of Vesuvius, I guess I could have missed them? Due to heavy traffic I would probably go from Sorrento to Pompeii by train another time but would definitely hire a guide at Pompeii. What I learnt from Lucia at Pompeii meant I understood and got so much more from the trip I made independently to Herculanium. You can take a coach from Pompeii to Vesuvius with ease - not eating really affected the day - I had a banana in my rucksack - thank goodness!
The tour was excellent and our tour guide Vivianna and bus driver Alberto were really friendly and helpful.
Mt Vesuvius is amazing and the views spectacular. Unfortunately, our guide and driver were very unorganized and we arrived late for the shuttle that takes you near the top of the volcano. We wasted valuable time that cut into our experience at Pompeii later in the day. You need to walk the last 0.5 miles up to the top of Vesuvius but the path is very safe. Being at the top of Vesuvius was one of the highlights of our trip to this part of Italy. We had a nice lunch near the entrance to Pompeii and it was included in the tour. Pompeii was fantastic but our time was short due to delays earlier in the day. Our guide was very knowledgable about the site and he provided important information about the history of Pompeii. Our group stayed in Sorrento and the shuttle bust picked us up at the hotel, drove to Vesuvius and Pompeii and returned at the end of the day. That was very convenient. It would have been a perfect day except for the initial delay in getting started.
This would have been a lot better had the poor tour guide not had to translate everything she said and there was a lot of it! into two different languages. This made it all very slow going not to mention hard for her, I'm sure and some of the younger members of the tour got very bored while we were standing around waiting. The thing is, Pompeii is massive, so there's no time to go wandering off on your own, meaning we had to stay within the group. The 4 x 4 side of the tour didn't happen. We took the coach up and walked the rest of the way to the summit of Vesuvius, so not sure what that was all about. That said, we still had a great day. Wear comfy shoes and take plenty of water if you're climbing Vesuvius - you'll be glad you did.
This was a fantastic tour. There were only 5 people including myself and the other 4 people were spanish so the poor tour guide had to speak spanish to them and then english to me but that was not a problem. Our pompeii tour guide was fantastic and the 2 hours flew by.
The only critic I have is the advertisement of the 4X4. Through reading reviews I had noticed they were not using 4x4's but a van. I had to reach out to the company and directly ask them and they confirmed due to a fire that a van is used instead. Personally as a consumer I should not have to reach out and ask these questions - the advertisement should read the actual title as I choose this tour over others because of the 4x4. Due to being end of season I had to keep the reservation but no discount was given to which I think should be. The next bookings are from March 2018 so contact the company beforehand to check the 4x4's are operational.
Overall the tour of Pompeii was great! The guide was informative and entertaining, even suggested a great little winery to stop at for lunch. The ruins are a must see if you're in the Naples area! We were slightly disappointed in that we got placed in a small van vs. the 4x4 for Mt. Vesuvius. However, the walk up/down to the volcano was fun and the sights on the trail were amazing. Both Pompeii and Vesuvius are must do's in Southern Italy and this tour was a plus during that adventure.
I had a wonderful time on this tour. They offered hotel pick-up, the driver was very nice and I really liked our tour guide, who could be a bit comical at times. It was very hot on the day we went, but the guide managed to keep us out of the sun most of the tour and still saw some amazing stuff. The guide spoke English and was very informative and the group for the tour was small, which was nice. The 4x4 portion of the tour, of Mt. Vesuvius was cancelled due to wildfires, I was a bit bummed about that, but that was out of their control.
The tour was too quick. We felt that we did not see enough of Pompeii. The crowds were not monitor. Our guide did not care if folks left the tour and wandered. Tours were not like they were 20 years ago.
Vesuvius was remarkable. Stunning and not enough time for those who took a slower time to get to the top and wanted to spend more time look around.
We've booked this $92/person trip mainly for the Vesuvius 4x4 climb which we've heard great things about, with Pompeii only a secondary objective.
Unfortunately, due to forest fire, Vesuvius was inaccessible. This is completely understandable and in no way the agency's fault. However, what follows next is.
The day before the trip the agency called our hotel to let us know about the cancellation of the Vesuvius climb and that the trip will only include Pompeii. We said "ok, we understand" and were promised a refund. The refund amount, however, was carefully left out.
Found out three days later what the refund was: $11/person.
We wrote the agency to complain about the ridiculous 12% refund for a trip that missed it's highlight, and got back an outraged response explaining how we are completely in the wrong, and how after the $11 refund we were charged the correct amount for their $80 "Half day Pompeii tour" which we ended up with.
I have three things to say about that:
If we are going to reference the price of another stand-alone trip to Pompeii, why don't we also reference the price of a 4x4 climb of Vesuvius (which I'm assuming is not $11)?
We would have never booked an $80 trip to Pompeii, since there are tens of other offers charging half that for the exact same thing
Wouldn't fairness dictate that we should be given a clear choice without withholding information from us? Something like "Would you like to cancel the trip and get a full refund, or take the Pompeii Half Day tour and get an $11 refund"? I know which one we would have picked.
To sum it up, for $160 we got a 23 mile bus ride (not even with the promised hotel pickup/drop off) and some bits of Pompeii history we could have received from a free booklet or a 3 second Google search.
They seem to think this is fair. We don't.
The Pompeii part of this trip was very good and the guide was very informative. The Vesuvius part was not so good, I think we were taken to the upward path that was much harder to do but was less populated. Consequently neither myself nor my 16 year old daughter were able to make it to the top. Where as, when I went before to the other pathway up, with my elderly mother and two small children, we all made it to the top fairly easily. I felt throughout the trip that we were being rushed through and choices were made in accordance with how many people were there. We were made to feel uncomfortable if we wanted to stop and purchase things from the stalls. I was disappointed with this trip and would not recommend it.
This was a wonderful tour. It was 6 hours out in the sun though, so be careful in the heat of summer!
The tour and Tour Guides were excellent. Our driver was well versed, funny and very accommodating. The Guide around Pompeii was superb and brought the place back to life for us. The only down side was, whilst we were told entrance fees and lunch weren't included, I think they should let you know that you will need an extra 23 euro per person for entrance fees and and an additional 28 euro per person should your party wish to stay for lunch at the Vineyard. I only say this as one couple in our group didn't carry enough cash with them to enable them to do all three additional items but, fortunately they did carry a credit card and therefore could pay for their lunch at the Vineyard that way, other wise none of the group would have been able to go for the lunch at the Vineyard. As I say though this was our only criticism. We had an absolutely amazing day and the view at the top of Vesuvius is something we will always treasure.
It was a wonderful tour, even though it POURED when we were touring Pompeii. Our tour guide, Roberto, was very knowledgeable and entertaining. Loved seeing the top of Mt. Vesuvius--such an iconic place.
Could have spent more time in Pompeii. Felt very rushed due to the allowed time. Unfortunately the 4x4 part was cancelled due to weather. It would have been great if the time lost to the Vesuvius cancellation could have been used in Pompeii. Just got dropped off at the hotel early. Pick up and transportation were great and the guides were fine.
Only issue with the tour was we were combined with another group for the tour of Pompei 40 plus so this made it hard for the guided tour and comentry other than that all went to plan good rep and drivers
Excelled tour. Encouraged to have lunch which included wine tasting at additional cost. Not sure what you would do if you chose not to participate but so glad we did. Great food and great wine. Everything went according to plan and seamless.
Pompeii and Mt Vesuvius were beautiful, must-see sights and our guide was very nice, but this tour as a whole was somewhat disorganized and in my opinion, ended up being quite expensive.
After pick up, which didn't end until after 9:30 AM, we went to Pompeii for a 2 hour guided tour. It was really cool, but we saw very little in this time. Immediately following, we had lunch at a winery at the foot of Mt. Vesuvius. This was a very welcome surprise the place was gorgeous and the food delicious. From there, we headed to the 4x4 bus lot. If you are expecting a small jeep with no windows to see off the mountain like me, that's not it. It is just a bus and a bumpy ride through greenery. It takes about 15 minutes to get up to another landing and from there you climb about another 15 minutes to the top of the mountain. Its steep and dusty, I would recommend tennis shoes. The views are gorgeous up there. The alpine guide will give a short 5-10 min explanation, then you will have about an hour to walk around. From there you head home, we didn't get back until around 6:30 PM.
The price that you pay for the tour only includes the bus ride, a short guided tour a Pompeii by a 2nd tour guide and the 4x4 ride. The disorganization comes with the fact that little was prepared ahead of time, at each stop the guide needed to purchase tickets. Bring cash because on top of the tour price you will need to pay 13 euro per person to get into Pompeii to see and hear the included guided tour. Then another 10 euro per person to climb to the top of Mt Vesuvius - there really is not much to see if you were to decide not to climb up and the alpine guide is only included if you pay. In addition, while you were offered the option to go to the winery for 28 euro per person, this was the only option, so this cost is required as well. The original tour guide is solely there to get you from place to place, collect money and pay for tickets, she did not join us for most of the activities.
The tour of Pompeii was challenging - our guide walked very fast, and didn't give us time to stop to take photos very often. It has a stressful few hours chasing after him and making sure we didn't lose him amongst all of the tour groups. The Vesuvius portion, though, was amazing and well worth it.
The best part of this tour was the lunch at the local winery at the base of Vesuvius! Probably the best food we had during our stay. The ride on the 4 X 4 was really fun...almost like an amusement park ride due the the road conditions. Glad we had a guide in Pompeii to help us understand just exactly what we were looking at.
This is a great tour. While we were unfortunate that the weather wasn't so good it meant that there was a heavy mist on Mt Vesuvius which meant we didn't get to see it properly, but nobody can guarantee the weather! It was also quite unexpectedly windy, which certainly made the last leg of the climb to the top hard going - just make sure to bring a good windbreaker/jacket and very comfy footwear!
Pompeii was great, and our tour guide here was very good and well able to answer any questions put to her.
Our mini bus driver was a lovely young man - very presentable looking, and an excellent driver! However, it would be in his own best interest to learn some English as he was unable to communicate with any of his group he was driving.
One thing both my wife and I thought it would have been best to include the admission prices for both Pompeii and Mt Vesuvius in the cost off the tour - it felt like we were paying twice, having already paid for the tour!
Great value for money.
