Pilanesberg camping Safari from Johannesburg
Overview
What to expect on this overnight safari?
It may at first seem like South Africa’s largest botanical garden but we promise you that there are animals lurking around nearly every bush. The tour includes over 12 hours of game drives where you will get the opportunity to view the wild animals in their natural environment.
How we roll? We make use of proper canvass tents that just ooze ‘safariness' and include comfortable camping stretchers with a mattress. And just to make sure you don’t lose touch of those creature comforts, we even have a bedside light, duvets and fluffy white pillows. The rest of the camp comprises of a cooking/mess/communal tent. The traditional dinners are served under the stars next to roaring camp fire.

Darren, the owner drove me around on this safari. Darren is very knowledgeable about the wildlife. While driving with the windows down, Darren will detect their scent before you will, but once he mentions it, you will notice the scent yourself. By the scent, Darren will know what wildlife is in the area. I got to see four of the big five animals, plus many others. The only one I missed but was the leopard, but of course, nothing can every be guaranteed with wildlife in the wild unlike a zoo where it is always guaranteed. Craig who owns the campsite is very friendly and makes a good dinner and breakfast. We had lunch twice in the center of the park. The first day we watched the lionesses catch a warthog from our table overlooking the watering hole. The second day I tried the ostrich burger and found it was very good. I come to South Africa for an annual conference and will Darren's South Africa Adventures for very trip and will be recommending South Africa Adventures to other conference goers. We absolutely loved our two day trip with Shade to Pilanesburg! We absolutely loved our two day trip with Shade to Pilanesburg! While every day and trip can be different, he catered to what our group was interested in doing and seeing. We were thrilled by the animals we saw (including a lion pride on a successful hunt and all of the Big Five) as well as the beauty of the park’s landscape and flora. Shade was knowledgeable, interesting and funny. We had a lovely night just outside the park at Base Camp where we enjoyed a delicious fire cooked homemade meal as well as breakfast. Sitting by a campfire with a glass of South African wine enjoying the beautiful evening sky was the perfect ending to our first day. The tents were comfortable and clean. Having a second day (especially the early morning ride) in the park is a must if you want to see so much more than a one day can get you. Shade picked us up in Johannesburg at our hotel and dropped us as requested at the airport with plenty of time to check in for our flight. We can’t recommend this trip enough and would definitely book this trip with Shade again! The trip exceeded my expectations by far. Pick-up and drop-off worked as announced and the game drives were absolutelly stunning.

Great time with Shade and Derick. They customized the trip to my preferences, which was sincerely appreciated. Good communication and a great time on the game drives. Did both the big group (9 people) tours from 9a-3p as well as more private drives as park opened/closed. Good insight from both gentlemen on the animals in the park and patient with my questions. Would book this again in a heartbeat.
