What to expect
This is a typical itinerary for this product
Stop At: Archaeological Park of Paestum, 84047 Paestum, Capaccio-Paestum Italy
Paestum was a major centre of the Magna Grecia. The oldest traces of human settlement dates back to the Palaeolithic site. During the Imperial Age, Paestum began a long and gradual decline, until the final abandonment in the eighth century, due to swamping in the area. The Roman town, however, had its forum here, with the rally, the temple of the Capitoline Triad , the Basilica.
The entire archaeological area of the city is included in the UNESCO list of sites of worldwide interest, preserved as a heritage of humanity. Near the town at the mouth of the Sele, you can admire the ruins of the sanctuary of Hera (Heraion), one of the most important Greek sanctuaries on Italian soil. The sacred area incorporates, in addition to several secondary buildings, a major temple and a smaller building, called the Treasury, decorated with carved metopes now conserved in the Museum.

Paestum is an amazing collection of ruins and our guide was personable, knowledgeable, and easy to understand. The two hours spent amongst the ruins and museum go quickly, so if you want any meaningful time to wander, you will want to bring your own food or break away from the group at lunch time. I had an amazing time there and would love to revisit. I think other people would also really enjoy the tour, especially in the summer when transport in on a comfortable, air- conditioned bus. The site was a highlight of our trip to Italy with far fewer crowds than the Colosseum and our guide was able to share a lot of fascinating information. The tour stops in an area world renowned for its water buffalo farming, but the reality of their lives is truly upsetting. Living crowded in metal floored stalls for years with no open fields was incredibly sad to see as was seeing calves in cages so small they couldn’t even turn around. My tour group was all shocked to see how these animals, clearly valued for their milk production, live. I had assumed that since the tour stopped there that it would be a model of modern and compassionate farming, but that’s not the feeling we left with even with the delicious mozzarella end product. It is something to be aware of if you or your travel companions have a sensitivity to seeing as I do.A fascinating chance to see both Greek and Roman history in an up close and uncrowded manner. A fascinating chance to see both Greek and Roman history in an up close and uncrowded manner. The tour was top notch from the multiple pickup / drop-off locations around Sorrento to the great guide and driver. And as an added bonus, because these ruins aren't visited as much as those within Rome or Athens you get a chance to spend the time you want that you wouldn't get at those more congested locations.Very interesting trip. Roberta, our guide was very knowledgeable and helpful. Nice set of ruins that I'd not heard of before. Thanks also to Gaitano (hope I spelt it right), our driver.
