This is an interesting hike in special nature - the Magaliesberg were created by a meteorite strike a long time ago. The location is just outside Pretoria - but this is not too far away from Joburg areas (where I was picked up). Be aware, though, that from Joburg the local traffic can get chaotic in seconds and affect the schedual! The trail goes from lower ground with forest and water up to higher dry rocky areas (remember your sunblock), so the environments are quite varied along the way. For me as a visitor, it was a nice introduction to RSA nature. Protea, Aloe...different birds, lizards :-) , and even small monkeys....different types of rock, sand and vegetation etc make the landscape interesting all the way. At some points (if you come from Northern Europe as I do) you may even get that "am I still on Planet Earth?"-feeling when the land and the plants get really different from what you're used to at home. There are some features and views along the way too which are fun like the "Hospital Cave", and it was surprising for me to see Johannesburg in the horizon from the Magaliesberg; I hadn't realized how vast this city is. The hike itself is of medium difficulty if you're fairly used to walking but might get your pulse raising at points - but to visit the "Cave" site, you have to be able to climb a rubber-tyre-ladder (!?), a first-time for me! All in all, I thought this was a great hike. There is an abundance of things to see along the way, and your hosts are cool and prepared for most questions you might have as a visitor to the area.I was the only person booked on my chosen day but the trek still went ahead. I was the only person booked on my chosen day but the trek still went ahead. A good early indicator of the excellent service I was to receive. The main guide was the wife of the CEO of Africa Adventures who ran the trek and the other was her mother. Great company and conversation as we walked. Very informative on all that I saw. The trail itself is described as average to difficult but not too demanding. I am a fit 70 year old and found no difficulties. Stout shoes recommended as you walk over stretches of loose stones. Some very mild scrambling and a river crossing either by suspension bridge or a two person cable car/cage which you sit in and pull yourself across included. Loved the scenery (and the decommissioned nuclear power station that you can see not so far away!!). I would have no hesitation in doing it again. I was on a short business trip from the UK and wanted a days exercise, it was perfect. If I were staying longer I would not hesitate in booking with this company for longer treks. They offer some very interesting other tours not just in South Africa, such as Everest base camp and Kilimanjaro so they know what they are doing. We did the hike with Shade, he was very down to earth and funny. We did the hike with Shade, he was very down to earth and funny. We felt comfortable right away. It wasn't any problem to drop us off at a different place (near the area). He told us a lot of facts and stories in a funny way. We were a bit late and he was not rushing us at all. During the hike there were enough stops and he walked on our pace. We were also allowed to buy our own lunch, it's always good when you can choose what you want to eat.I was introduced to SAA on my first trip to JoBurg 5 months ago. I was introduced to SAA on my first trip to JoBurg 5 months ago. My experience was so well planned and executed that I knew I had to book them for another excursion on this trip. :) As I expected my overall experience was top-notch, and I was fortunate enough to be on the tour with the owner and his wonderful wife. The trek was easy to book and any questions I had were answered quickly using the 'Chat' function on their website. The hike itself was moderately difficult, but not difficult enough to keep us from talking and laughing the entire time. I'm already planning another excursion for my next trip in 2019. Thank you guys for an amazing day!Great way to explore what SA has to offer. If its adventure you after and memorable experiences then South African adventures is the place to start. Great way to explore what SA has to offer. If its adventure you after and memorable experiences then South African adventures is the place to start. I was looking to do an away hike in the Drakensburg mountains - I came across South African Adventures and they did not fail to deliver. It was fun and everything was taken care of, including return transfer from JHB, breakfast and supper and all fees. If you don't have your own tent, sleeping bag or floor mat they have you covered. Darren and his team are great! Nothing was ever to much and went out their way to accommodate any special requirements. Thank you Darren, Emma and Shade. - Redftb :)Had the pleasure of spending one day with Shade in Magaliesberg mountains. I booked very last minute and Shade & Darren arranged everything as promised. Had the pleasure of spending one day with Shade in Magaliesberg mountains. I booked very last minute and Shade & Darren arranged everything as promised. Park was close by so not to much time on the road to get there. Had a nice walk and enjoyed the sights & smells of the trail. The trail itself was easy going with some sections being slightly more challenging than others. Would definitely recommend this to others. much better than sitting in a safari truck all day! Thanks Shade!
