The Basilica di San Lorenzo, internationally known for the portico that fronts it, was probably the chapel of the Roman imperial palace built under Theodosius and one of the most imposing monumental Christian buildings in the entire Occident, as well as one of the world's earliest and most outstanding examples of a centrally planned building. When visiting San Lorenzo, the monumentality and decorative richness astound at first sight , which must have marked the city of Milan as the capital of the Western Roman Empire.
