Meteora and its history, monasteries built atop vertical peaks with no access whatsoever. Constructed by the 14th century and before that the monks lived in caves to hide from the Turkish attacks (9th century). This was in my bucket list and for my surprise my daughter and teen grandchildren did want to come to visit this with me and we all enjoyed and were amazed by Meteora, how monks and material were rope harnessed to get on the top of the peaks or by movable ladders, to construct and avoid Turkish to access the monasteries. It is also amazing the paintings, incredible how they managed to do all this. I always wonder how we have such wonders made by men when no technology or equipment were available. It seems that determination, hard work and good leadership pays off. Je recommande !Where to start,it's a long day but worth it if you like this sort of thing picked up from hotel transfers to ferry then air conditioned coach to meteora visit 2 monasteries take food and drinks because you don't stop for food till afternoon really long but enjoyable day English speaking guide onc...

It is like saying the Grand Canyon is breathtaking. Until you see it for yourself you cannot begin to capture the scope and sheer magnitude of these natural monoliths which are home to beautiful monasteries.

Wonderful place to visit and very interesting, guides were very knowledgeable and engaging. We visited from Corfu and there is a lot of travelling involved approx 4.5 hours each way, so understandably your time is limited at Meteora, we managed to visit 2 monasteries and have lunch in the town, to fully appreciate the area and visit more of the monasteries I would recommend 2 day trip. There are a lot of steps to climb so may be a problem for people with mobility issues.
