We have been on many wine tours and the “Madrid Countryside Wineries Guided Tour with Wine Tasting” from Gourmet Madrid Tours was one of the best organized we have experienced. The tour goes to three really small wineries in the Viños de Madrid wine appellation. There is a specific sequence so that at the first, the English speaking-winemaker explains the processes involved. At the second and third wineries, the guide has to translate since the people there don’t trust their English. However, there is no need for great wine making detail since the first winery took care of that! The second and third wineries are very old and sell their wines almost exclusively locally—in the village itself. Interestingly they use clay amphorae for some fermentation. Their wines are really good and absurdly inexpensive. Lunch is not included in the program, except that each winery provides ample and excellent tapas with their excellent wines. You are served cheese, cured meats, potato tortillas, potato snacks, bread, and olive oil. You will not be hungry for a long time! And the point of the tour is the wine: excellent local wines that are not exported, but are sold locally for ridiculous prices considering the quality. This tour presents an excellent sampling of the wines of the region. We even had a local sparkling wine. Our guide was Ishmael; he was an outstanding and knowledgeable guide. He is also a winemaker and supplies all the needed details. We had nine in our group with varying levels of wine experience and he was able to keep us all involved. Consider yourself lucky if he is your guide!Tour guide grouped everyone together and they sang happy birthday to me. I was so surprised, didn’t get it on video and they sung again. The guide discovered I didn’t like dry wine and worked with vineyard to provide me with a sweet grape base.

The cellars were very interesting and we appreciated that these were small, family owned wineries that we would not normally get to see.
