Tour Information

Overview
  • This tour was such an enjoyable and relaxing way to spend half a day in Havana. Our group of five had a really personalized experience that combined a lot of information about how folks in Havana live and a primer on Cuban culinary staples and home cooking techniques. Cooking and sharing a meal together with lots of time to just sit and talk with the guides felt more like a cultural exchange than a traditional guided tour. We never felt rushed or talked at. La Gorgola was a cozy, pretty hostel that felt like a friend's home. The price was extremely reasonable for the amount of time and effort as well as the meal we had, which was delicious and generous, including plantains two ways, vegetable soup, yuca, rice and beans, pork, dessert and coffee. We were also offered cocktails. We'd definitely recommend this tour.

Havana: Private Cuban Cooking Experience

From the meeting point at casa particular (guesthouse) La Gargola, you will walk through the streets of Old Havana to a farmer's market where the guide and the chef will help you select the ingredients to prepare a traditional Cuban meal. En route you will learn about the dual economy, food production, and the ration system that was implemented during the revolution. The guide will also be able to point out important sites in Old Havana and give a bit of history about the area.

Upon your return to the casa, help the chef prepare traditional Cuban dishes based on your selected ingredients. The meal depends on what is available seasonally, but typical Cuban dishes include congri (beans and rice), tostones (fried plantains), yuca con mojo (yucca root with garlic sauce), and ajiaco (chicken and potato soup). Once the meal is prepared the best part is next: the feast! Enjoy an excellent home-cooked meal with a traditional Cuban dessert and cocktail, and conversation with your new friends in Cuba.

Perfect afternoon & dinner
We had booked a cooking class ... we thought we were going to do the cooking under instruction, we were not, but that didn't matter. We started with a walk to a small vegetable market to buy some ingredients - Actually not as they had already bought, but they wanted to show were they got their ingredients. We 'cooked' traditional food (2 ladies) and our guide explained many different things about Cuba - so on top of a good traditional cuban dish, we enjoyed the company and a good dinner. We had a fantastic time
