The Barcelona zoo covers 13 hectares and houses 7, 500 animals. The zoo was built at the site that became vacant after the 1888 World Fair in the Parc de la Ciutadella. The zoo first opened its doors in September of 1892 on the day that celebrates the city's patron saint, Mare de Déu de la Mercè.
Barcelona zoo is known for its many primates, different species of marmosets, meerkats, and baboons. In addition, this zoo has a dolphinarium with bottlenose dolphins. Other unique animals here are the Iberian wolf, the Angola lion, and the Dorcas gazelle. This zoo also has a large collection of birds and reptiles. In addition to exotic animals, the Parc Zoològic de Barcelona is also home to native fauna, including birds of prey, the Iberian ibex, and the previously mentioned Iberian wolf.
