Overview

This is a short tour that shows you the lava from the 2021 eruption in Fagradalsfjall from the southernmost edge of the flow. This eruption ended in December 2021. The lava has reached lower ground, so it is now easily accessible by foot and no hiking experience is needed. You will be able to safely see the new lava that has already turned into black rock. You might even feel some of the heat coming off it, and see the steam rise from the lava field since there is still warmth deep inside the rock. This the the youngest rock you will ever see, since it has just emerged from the Earth‘s mantle.

Inclusions

  • Roundtrip transportation from Reykjavík
  • Professional tour guide

Itinerary
This is a typical itinerary for this product

Stop At: Fagradalsfjall, 241, Iceland

The original volcanic eruption in Fagradalsfjall lasted from March to December of 2021. This is a very geologically active part of Iceland, since this is where the Mid-Atlantic Ridge lies and two tectonic plates move away from each other. Still, this is the first eruption on the peninsula of Reykjanes for 800 years.

The lava has now slowly spread across hills and valleys. Only time can tell what new mountains and landscapes will be formed, but at least you can have front-row tickets to a part of this piece of Earth‘s history.

Not really impressed, booked to go on this tour but it was cancelled just before I went on holiday so rebooked again for another day, and with only a days notice it was cancelled again. Trying to adjust schedules and timings when on holiday is not good! So I can only presume that seat numbers and...

I would recommend this tour to everyone. :) Even though there is no above-ground volcano eruption or lava flow right now (but this changes at different times), we got to see the solidified lava and the feel the heat from underground. The landscape is spectacular and we are thrilled to get to see ...

This is a rare opportunity to see fresh lava flow from an active volcano. Unfortunately, the day I went was rainy and visibility was poor. We stopped first at the Krysuvik geothermal area. Then we headed to the lava flow. It is a 20-minute walk to the lava flow and out guide told us about the...

Friendly and very informative guide. The pick-up and drop-off went very smoothly and ample time was allowed at all the stops on the tour.

It is one of the best activity we have done during our trip in Iceland. I couldn't believe my eyes to be that close of an active volcano. Definitely an experience to leave once in your life if you have the opportunity. The guide was caring and really nice.

This tour guide talked nonstop about irrelevant information for the entire 1 hour ride to and from the volcano. Extremely repetitive and severely misinformed. She seemed to care more about hearing herself talk than what she was actually saying.
