I was pessimistic about this whole thing going into it, but I had a great time and overall experience. The sunrise was something reverent. It’s a special place with a profound experience— like watching the sunrise at the Grand Canyon or Crater Lake. Everyone else there was respectful of the space and allowed for a time of quiet contemplation of the dawn’s new light. The van driver was informative and interactive. He offered to take photos of all of the groups and was an experienced photographer who seemed to catch great moments for people. (I declined the photo sessions because that’s just not my thing.) After the sun rose, we went to a different spot for more photos and a different perspective of the volcano. The sky and landscape was brilliant and otherworldly. We got back in the van afterwards and went to the meetup spot to get our bikes and split off into groups that seemed to be based on experience. Drew was the tour guide for our group, and his presence is really what sealed the deal for me. He’s an experienced cyclist and biker who let us stop to smell the roses along the way and kept an upbeat personality the whole time. He groaned at his own dad-jokes and was informative with his own twist on the landscape, fauna, and flora. He also showed the utmost regard for everyone’s safety and good time. He also took everyone’s prior riding experience into account. I ride motorcycles and road bikes throughout Los Angeles all the time, which he acknowledged and knew that I didn’t need to be beaten over the head with info about safety measures. Anyone at any time has the option to stop the bike ride and ride along in the van at any point. A few people did, and still had a great time. One lady didn’t ride at all, but was there for the sunrise and wanted to share the experience with her husband, who did ride the whole way down. We stopped in a little town for a break, and then continued the last five miles of the ride. I had a great time and recommended this trip to a bunch of other people at the resort yesterday before writing the review today. NOTE: Believe them when they say it is cold at the top. Bring layers of clothes and gloves. Bring rain gear. Get adequate sleep the night before. Getting up at 2:00 AM to go ride a bicycle for 23 miles sucks. Be prepared for your endeavor and you’ll have a great time. Again, I can’t say enough good things about Drew. Thanks dude!!!!Excellent trip. Well organized, safety was top priority. Both the bus driver to the Sunrise part of the trip (Marlin) and our bike guides (Russell and Adam) were engaging and we could tell they truly enjoy what they do. Overall, our experience from reservation to the tour was Excellent. The company is well-organized in all respects. We’re glad we opted for the “guided” version because a chase vehicle blocked traffic behind us as we descended the mountain allowing for us to use the entire lane for the descent - we felt very safe because of this. Equipment they issued was great and the experience of the team was evident. Highly recommended! We did the Guided Sunrise Bike Tour by Cruiser Phil's. It's very chilly up there so be sure to bring warm clothes. The waiting for the sunrise is the toughest part. Our guide for the bike tour was Russell. He was extremely knowledgeable. He was all about safety which is a good thing. The ride was a lot of fun but you need to be very aware of your surroundings. I would highly recommend this bike tour. It was a great experience. Our favorite thing we did in Maui. Up at 1:30am. Drive to Haiku. Bus trip up Haleakala for sunrise, then views of crater and photo op. You ride brakes the whole time (strong hydralic brakes, be careful). Another photo op on way down. It is a fast ride, yes scary, so if that bothers you. The bus follows you down and has you pull to the side to let traffic pass. Stop in a small cute town for an hour break, snacks..There are about 3 hills to pedal up near the end, that was rough. you end up in Haiku at the bike shop. We did the Guided Sunrise Bike Tour by Cruiser Phil's. Our guides made this day for us! Be prepared to not get much sleep the night before; we had to arrive at the bike shop for check-in at 3 am. The staff checked us in quickly, provided helmets and raingear. There were several rest room opportunities throughout the trip. Eddie was our bus guide and made the hour drive in the dark very entertaining & educational. He is a master of the pun and photography. Haleakala at sunrise is an amazing sight! But wear layers, it is chilly 10,000 feet up. Our guided bike ride down was so much fun. I was a little nervous about all of the hairpin turns but safety was addressed on numerous occasions and our guide, Russ, kept me close by and coached me on the ride. Tony was our van driver and also an excellent photographer. Stopped in Makawao, "Cowboy Town" for breakfast which was a nice surprise. We felt well cared for by all of our guides on the sunrise and bike excursions. Overall, these two experiences are definite trip highlights for all in our group.
