My husband and I did this bike ride with a different company (that is no longer in business) 19 years ago and wanted to bring our kids this time (13 and 17). Yes, you have to get up early and yes, it's cold up there but it is one of the best things we've ever done...both times. Our pick-up by Drew at 1:45 was super smooth. He was on time and friendly. He brought us to their depot to get weatherproof gear, sign waivers and get fitted for a bike. We then went into a larger van that brought us up to the top of Haleakala. We were surprised how crowded it already was since sunrise was 6:05am and we got there around 5:00am. The other groups hogged up the spots and weren't really into sharing their space, but we pushed our way in. The sunrise was just spectacular!! Nothing like anything else we've ever seen. We then got back into the vans and made another pit stop to see the "crater" from a different angle. Then it was time to get on the bikes. Unlike last time, you have to start at 6,500 feet instead of the top of the volcano. Shiloh was our leader and he was great, patient and safety was his number one concern. The van follows you and blocks the road so the cars aren't really driving next to you. The switchbacks are a little nerve racking, but the breaks on the bikes were so easy to use you went at your own pace. The ride took about 2 hours and then we stopped in Paia for an hour to walk around and get some breakfast (I understand they have taken this part out which is a shame). Then Derek took us back to our hotel and we were back in our rooms by noon. It really is something that you should put on your bucket list...and then conquer. The sunrise tour and guided bike ride is a must-do for anyone who is visiting Maui. The sunrise tour and guided bike ride is a must-do for anyone who is visiting Maui. It is really early to get up to meet to drive up Haleakala but you will be richly rewarded. You need to decide on which ride you are wanting to do. I chose the guided tour because my wife was going to do the ride with me. This option afforded a person in front and a van blocking/assisting in the back. My wife chose not to ride because of wrecking before we left on the trip. I ride bikes all the time and it was very frustrating for me to stay in group with some riders that fought getting up to speed. Our guide, "Pistol Pete" was awesome and did a great job encouraging the slower riders to get up to speed. He made the ride to the summit and the ride down on bikes a great experience! My recommendation is that if you are an experienced rider you should choose the self-guided tour. Either way this is a great a trip and a once in a lifetime experience you HAVE TO do when you visit Maui. Also, the only other way to see the sunrise is to reserve a spot early with Parks Department and hope you get your day you want. Our pick up driver took 50 minutes to find another couple on our tour because they didn’t ask them for the address of where they were staying just the name of their condo. Our pick up driver took 50 minutes to find another couple on our tour because they didn’t ask them for the address of where they were staying just the name of their condo. That put the entire day and hour behind. Once we were on the bus one of the guides spoke for 1/2 of the trip to the summit without using a mic so 1/2 the bus could not hear him and we did tell them. We were taken to the summit, which we didn’t know we were doing. 2 in our party became ill with the altitude sickness and couldn’t do the bike tour. Our guide was impatient and condescending. We were told we had a short time to eat lunch at the end of the tour, although they did wait when we didn’t arrive back “on time. The day was not as expected or advertised. We were disappointed and will not use this company again.Had a great time viewing the sunrise and biking down the volcano. Guides and drivers were excellent.

The driver was super nice, but the bike leader was unsafe and acted like a bully. I had my strava app on, and it said I was going between 9-14 mph, and the car speed limit was 15 mph only one mile above the speed I was going, and the driver humiliated me for not acting reckless, forced me to go in the van, and was rude when I demanded to finish the tour which thankfully I was able too. They were in a rush to finish the tour on time and comprised our safety and dignity. Again the driver was amazing but I would never trust the bike guide. I never thought paying for a almost $200 tour that I would be picked on for being cautious and people were blatantly breaking rules like passing people and they did not get in trouble. I’ve been on bike tours before, usually the guides are accommodating to all levels and if there is a problem they tell the person in a discreet non humiliating way. I went on a bike tour in Thailand, they made sure all felt welcome from advance to novice. Only pay for this tour if you want to get bullied for being not reckless and safety consciences on a very dangerous steep road. This was an absolutely amazing experience! I would highly recommend this for anyone who is visiting Maui. Our guides, Dan and Tim, were not only hilarious, but so patient and kind. Dan shared so many wonderful historical facts about the island, along with some really fun myths. :)
