This is a must when visiting Maui! Our tour guide, Wayne, was fantastic - knowledgeable, nice, and had a captivating pace of speech that made it easy to pay attention - even early in the morning! Dress warm - some reviews say it's 35-40 degrees and technically it is, but when I read that as a Chicagoan I was not concerned. It actually feels like 10 degrees and even with a winter coat and hat I was so cold it hurt (and I do not easily get cold). Wear extra layers on top and bottom + a winter coat + a hat, gloves and bring a blanket. I wish I had known how freezing it would be so I could better prepare.
I booked this tour a day during the week at about 7pm at night for an available date the next day. This tour is for 2:30 in the morning but I never got an email with the confirmation of the time I was going to be picked up so I assumed maybe I would get a call for the following day. I get a call at 3:30am saying the vehicle is outside. I was not awake and definitely did not know I was being picked up at 3:30 so I called to get a refund because directions was not given and they refused to give me a refund when it was not my fault and they were not nice about it. I would not recommend this tour at all
Al was amazing! Highly recommend this trip. His knowledge of the area and wonderful personality made this a wonderful experience.
TERRIBLE! THE TOUR DID NOT EVEN PICK US UP! Do not book with this tour company! We woke up early for a 3 am pickup per the instructions. The company also confirmed the pick up time the night before. We spent a hour waiting for pick up and also on hold over the phone. This tour is unreliable and a scam!
While I highly recommend the sunrise experience, our driver on the tour was terrible. He mumbled, was difficult to understand. BUT I recommend going on a tour, it’s a crazy drive in the dark. AND be sure to pack heavy clothes. It was below 40 with heavy winds, and you wait outdoors for nearly two hours waiting on sunrise
Great views of the sunrise! Our tour guide, Dino was informative, however I wish we had a chance to discuss the silversword plant... We didn't really hear much about that. Also, I was told over the phone that we would have some time to hike a bit also, which we really did not. The views are spectacular at sunrise but be sure to bring warm clothes!! It was an experience I'm glad I did once, but next time I probably won't use a tour.
Ask for Tour Guide, Preston, he is endowed with knowledge of history, agriculture, astronomy, culture, and kept us all very engaged. We appreciated his humor, kindness and passion. We had a spectacular time and ride, we didn’t nap because we were having so much fun. 🙏🏼 I’ll never forget this experience.
The sunrise was great, our operator was informative, and breakfast was at a sit down restaurant. Very nice.
Had such a great time with my wife for our honeymoon on this trip. The tour guide was amazing and very informative. Definitely recommend this trip
Totally worth getting up super early for. Watching the sun come up over the clouds is so beautiful! It’s really something to see at least once, if not more. And our tour guide Preston was awesome.
Preston was great. Very knowledgeable and friendly. He made the trip great. Never made us feel rushed so we could enjoy our time
Preston was a great guide! His 8 years of Haleakala experience could definitely be appreciated! Great experience seeing such a unique sunset!
This was a great experience!! Be sure and bring warm clothes. Our guide, Al, made this trip incredibly fun, and told us a lot of the island history. This is a must do!!
Aside, from it being cold, the view was amazing. The sun never looked like that to me before-breath taking. I would do it again. The tour bus drivers lucky they get to see that every single day.
This tour is a must do when you visit Maui. It is breathtaking! The driver , Preston, was very knowledgeable, and entertaining. He made sure every guest had a memorable experience!
Our driver and guide was exceptional. His knowledge of the area and insight were amazing and enlightening.
We had an amazing time on our tour. Our tour guide Wayne was very informative telling us lots of facts and stories. Breakfast was delicious! Bring warm clothes! And blanket!! Would highly recommend this tour!
Great driver I had a awesome day worth it so fun. Breakfast was great and ride was so comfortable. It was so awesome to see the sunrise over the clouds of Maui.
Preston is an amazing guide/driver. He has lived in Maui for 30 years and has wonderful stories and local knowledge. He goes out of his way to plan an excellent experience and I highly recommend his tour to Haleakala.
Polynesian tours never picked us up and after we waited at the designated spot for 45 minutes we finally got ahold of the 24 hour contact which said - sorry he missed you. The company rep called the day before to confirm pick up .
I'm so glad I booked this tour! It is well worth the money to have someone driving who knows the roads, as you are going up in the dark. Preston was personable, down-to-earth, and a pleasure to have as a guide. He made this tour not only a ride to a beautiful sunrise, but a memorable morning experience.
Preston was AMAZING! I’m so lucky we had him as our driver and guide. He shared amazing facts and made us laugh the entire time. He pointed things out to the group that most tour guides wouldn’t. I learned so much not just about the location of the sunrise, but Hawaiian history as well! If he can get a raise, he should get one. If you’re able to request him, DO IT! He made waking up at 2 am bearable. 15/10 recommend him for this tour. He also dispersed jackets to those that were cold and even gave up his own personal jacket when he ran out. Sweetest man
Yes, it’s an early pickup. But someone does the driving for you. Our driver Wayne was VERY safe going up and down the mountain. We never ever felt unsafe. The view up top was spectacular. It’s cold, bring a coat. This coming from a Michigander. I think it was 38F this morning. Breakfast was OK, not the best. But service was nice and quick. We just got back and it’s 10:45. But we were 2nd off the bus. Highly recommended. Also, Wayne does provide a lot of info. I liked it. My wife wanted about 20% less. To each their own. Enjoy Maui. MAHALO
Preston was top notch. Even though it was an early tour he made it easy and accommodating. Recommended to all!!!
My husband and I went on the Haleakala sunrise tour during our honeymoon in November in Ka'anapali. We would highly recommend booking this tour rather than driving yourself to the top of the summit. The pick up was punctual and the driving was smooth. It was cold but beautiful at the top!
My driver Preston. He was knowledgeable, with wit and I could tell he enjoyed his job.Helpfulto all.
Wayne might have been one of the worst tour guides ever. He rambled on and on at 3 am, mostly about the local bird, the nene. We also didn’t feel too safe with him behind the wheel since he plowed into a sign and after going in forward and reverse, finally dislodged himself. He left a large scratch across the windows. Needless to say, it made us a little nervous as he drove through the clouds to get to the top of the mountain. The trip started really slowly. Not only do you have to go from hotel to hotel and make stops at the local Safeway, you will also stop at a Minit Stop to use the bathroom. You will then get back on the bus and drive 1/10 of a mile to a gas station to get snacks. Boarding and reboarding takes forever and just adds to the agony. The breakfast situation made no sense either. We put in food orders on the bus and then proceeded to wait about 30 minutes for the food to show up once we sat down. The food was pretty mediocre, but this review is about a bus trip… Finally, he said we would be returning around noon, but asked if anyone had to get back for something. I said “Yes. We have to get back for a tee time.” Wayne said “We’ll still get back at noon”. I have no idea why he even asked since he clearly didn’t care or listen.
Hello and thanks for reading my hints on totally enjoying this event. All positive and here are a few pieces for your consideration: 1/ Dress very warm, repeat very warm. Cover your ears. 2/ Not too worry, there are bathrooms at the summit. 3/ Be ready to produce your vaccination records to your tour guide and your hostess at the restaurant. They will ask to see them. 4/ If you are fortunate to have Preston as your guide LISTEN TO EVERYTHiNG HE HAS TO SAY. He is saying it for a reason which is for you to have a once in a life-time experience. Listen carefully for when he talks about where you might want to position yourself at the observation platform. He knows where. 5/ People will try to ooze in front of you and shall we say diminish the spot that you have been standing in for over an hour. Enough said on that one. Do it with a smile. 6/ Make sure your camera is charged and ready to go. 7/ It doesn’t get any better than this especially when the weather co-operates. If you have sun-glasses, bring them. In terms of a 10 star rating for Preston I give him a 12. Vince
We took the sunrise tour with Wayne. Wayne was so unbelievably slow and constantly talked about nothing interesting. We stopped at a rest stop every 30 minutes and it took forever to get up the volcano. I would never take this trip again. The only good part of the trip was when he ran into a sign and the alarm began to go off.
