Overview
  • There are few landscapes that excite the travelers as much as a visit to the enchanting Meteora.

The gigantic rocks with the breathtaking volume and height, as they sharply arise in the edge of a big flatland, interrupt the smooth landscape like they were unreal, form part of an impressive geological phenomenon that you can’t miss the chance to observe closely. Moreover, the human intervention in this eerie scenery is astonishing: Monasteries built in the highest point of the rocks, seem to hover between earth and sky, between human and divine element. In 1989, Meteora was added in the list of the World Heritage of UNESCO.

Great breathtaking views of Meteora! We were amazed!
But the organisation of the tour is far from perfect. No accurate info about access to the monasteries in advance (e.g. that only coins are accepted for payment, different dress code in the monasteries) - so if you are not prepared you may not get to the monasteries. Very little info about Meteora, the monasteries, Greek culture and history in general. Annoying tour guide with inappropriate jokes and behaviour. Few photo stops.

The view and landscape of the place is stunning and definitely worth a trip, whereas the monasteries (each costs 3 Euros and on the daytrip we visited 2 of the 6 monasteries) are not worth the money. If you have seen one monastery, you have seen all of them they are just there for moneymaking. The only thing worth 3 euros is the view you get from the terasses. Also you need to make sure to wear the right clothes otherwise they charge for them. (Women need to wear a long skirt, no pants and men need long pants and at least a t-shirt in 35-45 degrees in the summer thats harsh). If you take the trip from thessaloniki it takes 3.5 hours to get there, so 7 hours car drive in one day, which is the reason why we didnt have much time to visit the monasteries (we had 30 minutes for the small one and 45min for the bigger one, with 5-10min waiting for tickets thats not a lot of time, 15 minutes stop at a viewpoint and 1h lunchbreak) overall it was a bit rushed due to the long drives. Make sure to take some food with you. If you are fascinated by cool landscapes and culture like me its definitely worth a trip but take into account the points i have mentioned.

We visited one monastery and one nunnery and they were very beautiful as well as looking at the nature and views surrounding them. Lunch was great, and the guide and driver were friendly. In general, the tour was not super guided, as she didn't enter the monasteries with us, so perhaps the price is a bit high for what you get (lunch and monastery entry not included also).
We also had the air conditioning go out in the van on the way back... which was rough, but they did what they could and opened windows and gave us water, so I don't hold that against them so much.

Our driver Dimitrios was funny, philosophical, witty and made the trip enjoyable. No pressure or rushing us at the sites. A fun and relaxing day trip from Thessaloniki.

Was a wonderful day trip to such a majestic place. Even though it was one of very few days of rain in Greece, it added to the mystery and ambiance of Meteora! The clouds rolling in through the rocks and between the monasteries was beautiful. Our guide Lazarus was helpful and funny, a great combination! Know that running these kinds of excursions in times of Covid is difficult, precautions we 'Ok' but felt the social distancing could have been a bit better for the van journey.

This was an exceptional tour which exceeded our expectations. Our driver/guide, Dimitri, was knowledgeable and entertaining, and attentive to everyone’s individual needs. Meteora is a “must see” destination and this tour gave us a great experience that we will always remember.

Dimitiri was an excellent host. He was extremely efficient, friendly, funny, accommodating and made the experience so enjoyable. The trip itself is fantastic. The whole group were friendly and we always kept informed of the plans of the day by Dimitiri. I know the whole group really enjoyed the trip and lunch stop.
I have no faults about the trip at all. The tour was also extremely well organised and well adapted with the recent COVID changes and we were made to feel at ease despite new health regulations.

This tour was everything and more than I expected! Our guide Dimitris was excellent in his knowledge and enthusiasm, and we had an interesting and diverse group which helped. The views outside and within the monesteries were fantastic. A tour I will remember forever.

the sight was amazing.
However the guides were really just escorts..we had very dull rest stops. twice at the same dull motorway cafeteria there and back. lunch at ugly restaurant nowhere near the scenic taverns beneath meteora. We had to pay extra entrance fees to the monasteries
i feel i was ripped off badly.

More than 3 hours each way, but we only got to see a small nunnery and one monastery. The commentary in English was limited and the quality of language was poor.

This was a great trip and well worth the three hours travel time there and back to see these monasteries. The scenery was amazing and the views spectacular. Our host Natasha was very helpful and prepared us for what to expect including climbing 142 steps to reach the top of one of the monasteries. A must if you’re traveling to Thessaloniki. We recommend you book online and research the best pickup location. Also bring snacks as the day is long and lunch was expensive.

I would have given it s 2 star but ai decided to add 1 for the tour attendant. She was trying really hard to smooth things out. First, the bus was very old. It even had built in ash trays in its seats. The airconditioner was barely working. It was hot. Then our tire got flat so we had to wait for it to be fixed. The good thing was that we waited at one of the rest areas where the tour buses stop so all the tourists could spend money on junk. We wasted more than hour waiting for the tire to be fixed. In order to "save time", the money for the entrance were collected on the bus, however several men, including a 17 year old child, were not allowed inside the monastery because their shorts were too short. They were not even allowed to cover themselves up. 3 euros for the entrance was not a big deal so no one asked for the money back, however the incident ruined the mood and the overall experience. On the way back we stopped at one of the tavernas for lunch The food was mediocre to say the least and extremely overpriced. Usually you can get the greek salad in thessaloniki for 3-4 euros. here it was 9! We had to make another unnecessary stop at the same rest area we stopped on the way there. Overall, very disappointing experience.

So please with the experience to visit the monasteries. My favorite was Varlaam. We learned a lot of local history from our driver. He even shared his favorite restaurant, which was fantastic.
