What to expect
A guided tour of about one hour into the history of the First World War in Italy. The tour starts every hour from 10 am to 5 pm: 10 am; 11 am; 12 am; 1 am; 2 pm; 3 pm; 4 pm; 5 pm last. An italian WW1 fortress intact with 4 Schneider's guns (french guns, the last in the world of this time) of 149S of caliber, yet rotating and elevating. Powder room, barraks, headquarters, underground tunnels...and a wonderful "belvedere" on the Como Lake. Forte Montecchio Nord was utilised to stop any invasion proveining from the North of Italy (Valtellina-Passo dello Stelvio; Valchiavenna-Passo dello Spluga). In WW2 this fortress has stopped the Mussolini column firing on the other side of the Como Lake. Her five heavy shoots where the last artillery shoots of WW2 in Italy, the 28th of April 1945.

Been to lake como many times and had never heard of Montecchio, if you are interested interested in anything ww1/ww2 well worth a visit. The guide took time to explain in English although we where the only to non Italians in the group

Posto all'ingresso della Val Chiavenna e della Valtellina doveva bloccare l'avanzata verso la pianura Padana di un eventuale esercito invasore. La struttura è tenuta magnificamente, è quasi totalmente visitabile e dalle cupole corazzate si gode di una vista stupenda. Prezzo d'ingresso 8 euro a persona con visita guidata. Consigliato agli amanti di architettura militare e non.Il luogo è molto suggestivo, tante cose interessanti e ben tenute da vedere. Ottima la conduzione e la gentilezza della guida. Accessibile anche con bimbi piccoli e cani.

Om het ietwat saaie Colico te ontvluchten zijn we min of meer per ongeluk bij het fort terechtgekomen tijdens een wandeling. De dame achter de ontvangstbalie wist met haar innemende enthousiasme de attractie op een plezierige manier te verkopen. We kregen op voorhand een uitleg over het fort in het Engels om alvast iets in te lezen. Tijdens de rondleiding in het Italiaans en Engels wist ze op een humoristische en enthousiaste wijze veel interessante feiten van het fort op te noemen. We hebben een zeer plezierige rondleiding gehad in het fort dat inderdaad bol staat van de geschiedenis uit zowel de eerste als tweede wereldoorlog. Een interessant object met vakkundige en enthousiaste medewerkers. Absoluut een aanrader
