This afternoon family-friendly adventure delivers an unforgettable, hands-on journey into the untamed beauty of northern Iceland’s river wilderness.
Make your way to the rafting base in Hafgrímsstaðir where your adventure starts. Begin by meeting your international team of guides at the river base, where you will get prepared and dressed in drysuits for your trip. From there, the rafting bus will take you on the short road to the put-in point for the raft at the West Glacial River. After a full explanation, demonstration, and training with your guides, push off from the river bank for a 90-minute, 10km descent of gentle rapids, spectacular scenery, and riverside hot springs. Conditions permitting, boost your excitement with a friendly cliff jump and a swim in the bubbling glacial waters of northern Iceland.
Along the way, enjoy a steaming cup of hot cocoa made directly with natural hot water from a riverside hot spring!

- Minimum age: 6
- Recommended items to bring with you: Thermal underwear/base layers, warm fleece top/wool sweater, fleece pants/extra long johns, thick wool socks/hiking socks (at least 1 pair), change of clothes for after the river, any necessary medications (asthma inhalers, etc.), waterproof camera (optional)

- No heart problems or other serious medical conditions
- Most travelers can participate

If you have the time to eat, I would highly recommend ordering the lunch. It’s delicious. We had both the vege and meat dishes made by their cook Roshan. A perfect finish to a fantastic afternoon rafting.

What an amazing experience! We were one of the first, of not the first trip of the season. Hunter and Tarzan were the best! I am a first time rafter and they made me feel like I was in good hands!! What a blast! A must do!!

We had the best time rafting here. Our guides Hunter and Tarzan were the best. The gorge was beautiful in its own way the first of May and the animals were curious. The hot chocolate we made from the hot spring was pretty awesome too. The climb up the river bank afterwards was a little grueling, ...

Had an amazing time. Our guide joe was excellent and very helpful. Benji took photos capturing highlights and candid moments. Mirto and his dog Kolur were delightful. Lunch was a fine dining experience prepared by Roshan.

Oh, yes. An unforgettable experience, indeed. We ended our Iceland journey in Akureyri and decided the very last day for a "family rafting" in the afternoon, being the only option left. When we reckon that the 3.5 hours of rafting could have impaired the timely back trip to Keflavik, the admin...
Oh, yes. An unforgettable experience, indeed. We ended our Iceland journey in Akureyri and decided the very last day for a "family rafting" in the afternoon, being the only option left. When we reckon that the 3.5 hours of rafting could have impaired the timely back trip to Keflavik, the admins were unexpectedly ready to refund us anyway. They were so kind that we chose to speed up our plans and to enjoy this opportunity instead. It was the right decision and the results definitely exceeded our expectations. Apologies for remembering only the name of our great guide, Benji, very professionally assisted by his colleague from Tibet and by the supernice driver from Spain. We have been provided with dry suits, shoes, helmets, gloves, then briefed about every aspect of the activity and shortly but effectively trained with an on-the-ground simulation once reached the starting point. As they say on the website, the "family rafting" is not just a boring sliding and drifting tour on a calm, lazy river. Quite the opposite, instead. It is very fun, absolutely safe and exciting, in particular for whom, like ourselves, at their very first experience. For us the whole trip to Iceland was the opportunity of reuniting the family abroad after 1.5 years of COVID-related constraints, and nothing more than rafting enhances the feeling of togetherness and teamwork. Thanks to Viking Rafting, to Benji and his colleagues, we lived a great experience which I recommend to any adventurous traveler. Paddles up, guys!!!
