Tour Information

Overview
  • Join us for a just slightly offbeat, fully all-inclusive night tour of Tenma and Kyobashi, two of Osaka's most well-known local food and drink areas! You'll get to eat typical Osaka food, have a few drinks, frolic with the locals, and have all sorts of fun along the way! Our guides are top-flight entertainers with native or truly near-native skills in your language, plus Japanese fluency. This small group tour (6 guests or less -- and it usually is less), combines history with adventure, as you explore the nooks and crannies of these very old parts of this awesome city. You're sure to have a great time getting to know the REAL Osaka, and be welcomed as a friend in the establishments we visit and the neighborhoods we stroll. We pride ourselves on quality from guide to food, and can't wait to provide you with an unforgettable night out. Plan on spending about half the time exploring, and half the time eating - a balance we think makes for a great night!

Deep Osaka All-Inclusive Nighttime Foodie Cultural Experience

Stop At: Pulala Tenma, 3-1 Ikedacho, Kita-ku, Osaka 530-0033 Osaka Prefecture

We've got lots to show you in this historic neighborhood, and not just related to food either. Over the course of a 35 minute stroll, you'll learn about the history and now of this part of Osaka. We'll also visit two different restaurants here in Tenma, spending about half an hour in each. This is THE foodie city, so let's get down to the details! Food will vary by restaurant and your tastes over the course of the evening, but typical dishes include kushi katsu (various fried food on sticks), dote nikomi (slow cooked beef... parts), "tonpei yaki" (a grilled pork and egg dish), poached chicken with sesame seed dressing, slow simmered vegetables in a light soy sauce fish stock, lightly pickled mackerel, and much more! We always serve at least ten dishes on our tours.
Incidentally, for those looking for something extra beefy, we offer the option of adding 100g (3.5 oz.) of well-marbled Kobe (or nearby) beef at one of our stops. Delicious, but plenty of food tonight even without the beef.

Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes

Stop At: Ogimachi Park, 1-1 Ogimachi, Kita-ku, Osaka 530-0025 Osaka Prefecture

Though most of our time will be spent in a lively warren of smaller streets, we take a little break here to see one of Osaka's favorite green spaces. Nice views, and great cherry blossoms too during spring.

Duration: 15 minutes

Stop At: Tenjimbashisuji Shopping Street, 5-6-30 Tenjimbashi Kita-ku, Osaka 532-0011 Osaka Prefecture

The longest covered shopping street in Japan, Tenjinbashisuji has a duly long name to match! We're not about shopping on this tour, but we'll walk down a short portion of the street to get a feel for the scene. Almost all the stores are local, so it's not like the homogenized shopping areas in so many other central parts of the city.
Speaking of small scale, since our tours never have more than six guests, we are welcomed into restaurants as part of the family - not as a factory processed tour brigade. You can absolutely count on some fun local interaction!

Duration: 15 minutes

Stop At: Kyobashi Station, Japan, 〒536-0015 Osaka, Joto Ward, Shigita, 1-chōme−3, 2番31号

After we've thoroughly surveyed Tenma, we'll hop on a train (fare included) for the short ride to Kyobashi, our second neighborhood of the evening. It's here where the famous Tokaido road from Tokyo to Osaka has entered our fair city for centuries. The neighborhood's vibe is a tiny bit more salubrious, but equally fun - and filled to the brim with character. In Kyobashi, we'll walk around about 10 minutes before stopping at a final "standing bar" for more food and drink (included).
We love this area because people are super friendly, and the neon and architecture in general still looks just as it must have in the 1960s when Kyobashi really grew into its own during the post-war boom.

Duration: 1 hour

Sample Menu

• Ko-aji Nanban - Delicious sweet pickling of small mackerel, served with (also pickled) thinly sliced onions.
• Dote Nikomi - Osaka style slow cooked beef in a miso sauce.
• Potato Salad - Experience the Japanese interpretation of potato salad! Nothing strange, but it is different.
• Tonkatsu Oroshi Ponzu - Tonkatsu (deep friend pork) with a delicious twist! The addition of grated radish and ponzu (sweet citrus vinegar) makes for a tasty juxtaposition.
• Kushi Katsu - An Osaka favorite, and we know the best spots! Deep fried meat/veg/other skewers with a sauce.
• Tonpeiyaki - Another classic Osaka dish, this creative combination of pork, egg, sauce, and dried fish flakes is a real crowd pleaser!
• Vegetarian Options - Plenty! Tofu, cucumber with Miso, simmered vegetables, and more.

Our guide was absolutely hilarious, personable, and informative! The tour took us around to various local spots that we definitely wouldn't have braved or understood on our own. Each spot had very accommodating hosts, great food, and unique drinks. Between locations we learned about local life, history, and industries. Highly recommended if you're in Osaka!

Levy was our guide for this evening tour. We visited bars and restaurants, passed into gambling dens, viewed love hotels, and walked through fascinating shopping arcades. Levy gave us a great look into Japanese culture and with so much information, with his culinary background and years of experience. We had a lot of different types of drinks and food on the tour, and were quite full at the end. Afterwards, Levy kindly gave us a ride back to Dotonbori where our hotel was. We would definitely do other tours with Levy again.

This was a great fun and value for money tour. The meeting place around Temma station was easy to find. The area that we toured was alive with quirky bars and eating places . We tasted traditional delicacies and the blind tasting was a lot of fun.(ask after tasting). We tasted some crackin Whiskey and Sake . Our guide Kevin was a wealth of local knowledge and made sure that we blended into the scene.

The first 2 resturants were really interesting and gave a good insight into eating in Japan - the first was great - very much a place for locals, the second much smaller and perhaps more geared to tourists but a great place with good ambiance, the third was not up to the standard of the first 2 and was perhaps a little disapointing -

Kevin showed us a range of eating styles, incl. the Stand and Drink restaurant, which we wouldn’t have tried without his help. He judged our palate really well and ordered accordingly. We really liked the oyster and egg soup in the very cosy bar. It was a delicacy we had never tried before. He gave us an insight into Japanese culture through Western eyes, incl. Pachinko parlour and Love Hotel. We highly recommend booking a Food and Drink tour in Osaka.

Worst "food tour" I've ever been on. Only reason it gets 2 stars instead of 1 is that there was actually food.First hour of the three-hour tour the guide had us awkwardly wander around to kill time before our reservation. Instead of spending this time getting snacks from a street vendor or teaching us about Osaka's culinary history, he showed us a pachinko hall and love hotel and pointed out prostitutes.Tour did not teach us about Japanese cuisine like you'd expect from a food tour. Guide didn't even tell us WHAT we were eating half the time, much less anything about the dish's history. Tour guide also tricked us into eating whale without telling us what it was until afterwards. He may not have a problem with eating whale but many MANY people have moral objections and I am livid that we couldn't make that choice on our own!

One of the best tours I have ever taken. My son and I were the only ones on the tour, due to another group cancelling. Our guide, the owner of the company, knew Osaka inside and out. As an American from the Bay Area, he was great at comparing and contrasting the Osaka people from their counterparts in Tokyo, as well as we Americans. The tour made several stops in markets and stores, as well as stops for food and drink. The owners of the restaurants knew our guide as well, obviously sharing a close relationship, for quite some time. All of the stops for food and drink were great, and we did not want for anything else to after the tour. I can't recommend this group enough, and plan to take another tour when I return at the end of the year.

We got to visit restaurants we wouldn't have known about except for our guide. We had a great variety of food for both the adventurous and the not-so-adventurous eaters. The price includes plenty of food and drink so you probably won't need to spend extra. One of the surprises of the tour was that it also included fun cultural tidbits and local colour above and beyond food. We did this tour our first night in Osaka and it set the stage for a great time in the city.

Kevin Boynton knows his stuff....and he makes this evening food and drink tour one of the best tours I have booked by Viator. I booked about 5 food and drink tours. None compare to Kevin's knowledge of Osaka and of Japanese cuisine and liquors! I think it always helps when you enjoy the company of those on the tour, as well. This group was fun and we went to places you wouldn't find unless one knows Osaka...this is a must do ..and it should be on the front end of your stay in Osaka. A treat was a Suntory and Nikka tasting...what fun and so educating. Many thanks, Kevin!

The tour was really interesting with an English speaking guide who has lived in Osaka for many years. We got to try a variety of local delicacies in local restaurants that we wouldn't normally have tried which added to the experience. This was more than just a food and drink tour with our guide explaining about other parts of modern Japanese culture helping to build a bigger picture. Be prepared to stand while dining like the Japanese do.

Dylan took us to some great food spots in Osaka that I would never have came across or tried without his help and guidance! I also appreciated how he depicted Osaka and just Japan itself with it’s pros and cons, giving a true picture of the culture.
