Overview

The Corfu island is unlike the rest of Greece. This place was never fell under the Ottoman oppression, so it is more Western than the rest of Greece. And it is also more cultural part of course - the first Greek University was found here, the first Philharmonic Orchestra and the First School of Fine Arts.

Your guide will pick you up from your hotel or cruise ship.

Your first stop will be at Achillion palace in village Gastouri with the inside visit of it and a guided tour.

Then you will have a small drive to Paleokastritsa and visit the monastery of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Then you will have time to have lunch in one of the restaurants by the seashore.

After having some rest and food you will take your way to explore the old city and to stroll in town visiting all the main sights.

At the end of the tour, you will be driven back to your hotel or ship.

Achilleion is a palace built in Gastouri on the Island of Corfu for the Empress Elisabeth of Austria, also known as Sisi, after a suggestion by the Austrian consul Alexander von Warsberg.

Stop At: Paleokastritsa Monastery, Dytiki Kerkyra Greece

In the Kanoni peninsula, south of the city distinguished the small Monastery of Vlachernon which is connected to the mainland by a footbridge. In 1568 was first mentioned and in 1799 officially belonged to the family Halikiopoulou-Mantzarou. In 1822, indicated in the book of the German writer Ferdinand Grigoroviou. By 1980 functioned as a nunnery. The name Vlaherena or Vlaherna derived from Constantinople where it was a great monastery. The church is dedicated to Our Lady Vlaherna (or Vlachernon) and dates from the 17th century. It is a small church, white with a tile roof and a belfry with triple story spire. At the base of the belfry, there is an arch from where one enters the courtyard of the monastery and then at the church. The interior of the temple bears carved chancel located next to the icon and the "Lady Vlaherna."

The New Fortress of Corfu is a Venetian fortress built on the hill of St. Mark in Corfu in stages. The original architect of the fort was the military engineer Ferrante Vitelli. The current buildings which exist within the fortress were built by the British during their rule of the island.
