What to expect
Our first duty is to visit the "10 de Agosto" local market to handpick the ingredients that will be needed for our lunch. There's nothing better than handpicking ingredients which are commercialized by the local farmers and vendors of the region. This will give an added flavor to our home-cooked meal! We will now proceed to visit a welcoming local family that will invite us to their kitchen where we will begin our class. The chef will lead you to step by step into making our meal into perfection. Whether it's a “Locro de papas” a “Seco de Pollo” or any of the options we have, you will have the chance to learn about the local dishes and culture.
Stop At:
• Mercado 10 De Agosto, Calle Larga, Cuenca 010150 Ecuador
Sample Menu
• Locro de papas - The most typical soup of the Ecuadorian highlands made with potatoes, cheese, and avocado.
• Quinoa Soup - One of the very important indigenous foods made with quinoa, cheese, milk, onions, garlic.
• Empanadas de Viento - Fried cheese empanadas until crispy and served sprinkled with sugar.
• Seco de Pollo - Chicken slowly stew cooking in a sauce of onions, garlic, peppers, tomatoes, herbs, and spices.
• Fritada - Fried until crisp cubes of pork served with Llapingachos (grilled mashed potatoes), corn, and salad.

Javier and Maria were so friendly and knowledgeable on all things food and Ecuador. We seriously can’t recommend this tour enough. Right in a local home it felt like a few friends having lunch and hanging out. We wish we had more time in Cuenca because we would’ve done more tours with Bestours!

On Feb. 28, 2019, my wife Barbara and I enjoyed our day with our hosts, Javier and Alexandra. Javier picked us up at our apartment promptly, and took us over to shop for vegetables and fruits at the Mercado de August. His English speaking is superb, and he toured us around, describing a number of things to us. The market is certainly a beehive of action! He then drove us to his lovely home, where we were then put to work by his lovely wife Alex, cutting and measuring and stirring and asking loads of questions. We made our favorite Ecuadorian soup, Locro de Papa. And rice, and Secor de Pollo. We also cooked Yuca and a mixed ensalada. We sat down at their family table, the 4 of us, and shared some of our 4 family’s and lives. Their 2 daughters also came in and we enjoyed visiting with them as well. Javier and the family drove us back to our hotel. We highly recommend doing this cooking class! If you love learning about the people of a country and what they eat taking a cooking class in someone house is a great way to do this. If you love learning about the people of a country and what they eat taking a cooking class in someone house is a great way to do this. Our guide Wilson first took us to the market to show us what vegetables and fruits would be needed in our meal. If was fun seeing how a local deals and then buys from another. Then we went to his aunt house who let us do as much as we wanted to in the making of our meal which consisted of a soup, an entree and a dessert. It was a fun experience that we will always remember as we try to recreate the meals at home. If you are thinking about taking the course just go for it!!This was an amazing experience and the highlight of our trip to Cuenca! So much to learn about the fruits and veggies of Ecuador, plus the opportunity to taste them all was amazing. Helping cook our meal AND get the recipes was well worth it.
