Stop At: Zona Arqueologica de Yaxchilan, Tollan, 16 de Enero, El Tesoro Mexico
Yaxchilan originated as a small village about two thousand years ago; With the passage of time it became one of the most important cities in the Usumacinta basin.
A splendid setting of evergreen high forests shelters this magnificent archeological site famous for its patent sculptural art in steles and lintels. To build it, the Maya took advantage of the characteristics of the terrain of a peninsula surrounded by a meander of the river.
The development of Yaxchilán occurred between 350 and 810 A.D. Although the political expansion of the site over the region occurred during the Jaguar Shield I government, who ascended the throne in 681 A.D., it was during the Jaguar IV Bird regime when Yaxchilán reached his physiognomy and consolidated his hegemony, as early as the eighth century.
The surface of the city is very extensive but its visit is currently restricted to part of the Great Plaza, the great Acropolis, the small acropolis and the southern acropolis. The Grand Plaza is accessed through building 19, also known as The Labyrinth, because of the complex layout of its rooms. In the grounds of the square the ball game and small sets of buildings are located that, in some cases, seem to have had the function of palaces. In several of the constructions there are still the lintels that tell the dynastic history of the city; buildings 12 and 22 stand out. The great stela 1 stands on the square showing the Jaguar Bird IV.3 ...

Stop At: Bonampak, 29933 Chis., Mexico
Archaeological Zone located in the heart of the Lacandon Jungle, whose peak occurred during the government of Jaguar-Knotted Eye that ascended to the throne of Bonampak in 743 AD. C. The portrait of his last ruler Chaan Muan II, whose mandate began in 776 AD. C., was embodied in the steles, lintels and wall paintings that are still preserved.
Of the set, only the Grand Plaza and the Acropolis are explored. In the first one, the magnificent stela 1 rises, which shows Chaan Muan II dressed in great luxury to celebrate his fifth year of government. On the acropolis, which follows the uneven terrain, the paintings building was built. It has three chambers, the first one shows the presentation ceremony, by the ruling family of the heir to the throne and the provisioning of the lord by several servers. In the same room is the scene of the procession of the musicians.
The camera shows the scene of the battle and the trial of the prisoners. It highlights the presence of Chaan Muan II with a large jaguar skin headdress. The battle occurred on August 2, 792 AD. C. There is still no consensus on whether it is the crushing of a peasant rebellion or the victory over a neighboring group. In chamber three it represents the sumptuous ceremony to celebrate military victory. In it there are representations of dancers, nobles and musicians, all in front of the presence of Chaan Muan II who performs a self-sacrifice to offer his blood to the gods.
The murals were never finished and after painting them, the site was abandoned for reasons still unknown ....

WARNING SCAM - ONLY INCLUDES VISIT TO BONAMPAK. My only bad experience in Mexico out of 5 weeks backpacking trip, alone. They'll pick you up on time, which is great. Then they make you change vehicles 7 times in one morning, without ever explaining why. And on none of the cars taken was the name of the tour operator the same. Moving on. You pay for an English-speaking guide...who ends up speaking Spanish. Not the most disturbing thing yet. Then, once you're in the middle of the jungle, with no network, they'll tell you that access to Yaxchilan is closed for the day, and that you'll only be able to see Bonampak - which is a beautiful place, but absolutely not worth the price of the 1-day trip ($83). They'll even tell you it's for your own safety, that it happens often. However, they won't have a plan B (so after 4 hours of waiting, they'll offer you a jungle walk IF the driver is willing to drop you off). Next, you'll be treated to lunch in a restaurant where you risk food indigestion in the only dirty place I've seen in Mexico. And you'll see your driver drinking, a lot, which won't increase your confidence in them. The final straw came on the way back, with 7 of us in a car designed for 6 (2-hour journey, impossible to put your seatbelt with yet another driver who had also been drinking at lunch), when I contacted the Yaxchilan site, which told me it was open. In my opinion, either this tour operator doesn't have the authorization to visit the site, or it's a well-functioning scam. In short, I lost a very precious day of my trip, when I could have continued to explore this magnificent country, and met wonderful people with their hearts in their hands. Not once did anyone TRY to rip me off, not once did anyone look down on me or roll their eyes at me as I tried to gibber in Anglo-Hispano-Italian, except them. I really felt bad and even doubted they'd take me back to the hotel. In short, take any tour operator, but not this one.Trip was goed georganiseerd. Bieden vooral vervoer en maaltijden aan. Trip was goed georganiseerd.
