We stayed for two weeks Jan/Feb 2020. Terrific beach and pool complex. Plenty of beach and pool beds, but they need more umbrellas. There are shops and vendors on the beach who sold all types of products and trips.Food in all restaurants was better than we expected, very good service from all staff. Entertainment was good fun, the staff tried really hard to make the evenings fun. Various games during the day but no pressure to join in. Our room was 2011, which was on the small side but had a great view. We had a few issues which were addressed very quickly, however we had to change rooms after the A/C stopped working. We did one trip, the round island Catamaran which was a great way to see the island, we booked though Wesley but there are many options to buy.The 3 stars are only because the staff & the food was fantastic which I will get to later on. The 3 stars are only because the staff & the food was fantastic which I will get to later on. We have traveled a lot & stay in 3 star resorts I can honestly say this is the worse place we have ever stayed in & will never go back there. From the outside it looks tired but ok we checked in all good so far ….things changed when we opened the door to our room & saw what we payed so much for ,now my wife the week before had gone shopping n came home to tell me to book 2 weeks off because we were off to Antigua in 7 days she wanted to surprise me so when she saw the room she was very upset it doesn’t even look like the pictures she had said so she phoned reception to change rooms but it was just the same at least the aircon worked better than the other rooms aircon. My wife was so upset but because it was late in the day & we had to wait over an hour for them to sort another room out for us which turned out to be underneath our first room we decided to make the best of it . Now our first room had been on the first floor to get to the first room you went up a set of uneven stairs along very narrow open to the elements corridor which had puddles in places & because the floors had been painted with what looked like garage gray floor paint became slippery. The next day while we were at the pool we got talking to a Canadian cpl who originally had a room like our one so asked for an upgrade & got a nicer room for an extra $20 a night they told my wife where their room was so my wife went to ask for the same upgrade she came back maybe 10 minutes later quite angry now because yes we could upgrade to a room in the same block but unlike the Canadian cpl it would be $60 a night just about said it all to us so we gave up with getting a better room. So after our first day by the pool we returned to our room to cool down to find our room had not been cleaned our towels hadn’t been changed….what the hell….turns out housekeeping only comes if you ask 24 hours ahead of time your room isn’t automatically done we had never been anywhere in all our travels that didn’t automatically clean your room you can ask for clean towels n toilet rolls you will get them…and listen to this….you can ask for your room cleaned a couple of times during the week but the second week you will be charged $10 each time your room is cleaned.I went upto reception to ask what was happening why hadn’t our room been cleaned I had just about had enough of this hotel for the money my wife had payed n our room hadn’t been cleaned I asked to speak to the manager when he turned up & I started to ask about the cleaning of the room you could see he wasn’t interested in what I was asking & told me to read the small print that was it as far as he was concerned. Housekeeping wasn’t busy because the resort I think during our time at the most was300 guests at one point there was only 120 guests so the resort was never busy thank god. The very worst thing that happened at the resort was the water supply kept being shut off…now we were told that they had a leaking pipe which was being worked on it would be switched back on as quickly as possible so there was no water in the taps no showers & you couldn’t flush the toilets turned out to happen pretty much every day us the guests were given many excuses about no water we later found out the real reason why the water was off all the time by our taxi driver the hotel ran out of water n wouldn’t buy any extra ,each day the hotel buys 12,000ltrs of water like the other hotels unlike jolly beach resort the other hotels buy in more jolly beach didn’t so once the resort used it that was it till the next day so no flushing or washing for us very un hygienic all the locals apparently think jolly beach is a joke & should be knocked down . We decided just give up to make the best of it try to relax enjoy our holiday which we did but the jolly beach resort is the worst hotel we have stayed at . The food was very good & very tasty quite well presented you didn’t go hungry you had an À la cart which was very well presented the food was great I had stake each time & it was cooked just how I liked it n very tender . The staff I have to say were all fantastic very polite always greeting us wishing us good morning or good evening. The swimming pools were in general nice & clean a member of staff was cleaning them every day. Down at the main pool you are able to get lovely food during the day burgers, hotdogs etc very tasty. The beach area they say jolly beach is in the top 5 beaches but it was disappointing because the beach was always covered in weed that’s brought in by the the sea never cleaned frankly I’ve seen better but the sea was lovely & warm to swim in but don’t bother snorkelling it’s zero visibility & nothing to see. As I’ve said I’ve done a lot of travelling & every beach is always covered with rubbish but jolly beach has little to none i always take a walk along the beaches picking up rubbish you know doing my bit in the 2 wks I was there I only picked up 3 cans & a plastic bag great to see. 5 minutes walk from this resort is a great little supermarket with fantastic air con it was so cold in there & there are cash machines but only give you Carrib dollars if you want American dollars you have to go to a bank the resort don’t change money & no one takes uk money they prefer American dollars so if you want to do any trips make sure you have a nice wedge of dollars because everyone wants their piece of the pie so you might book a trip think you have payed for it only to find out you then have to pay for the taxi. So that’s it for this review will I go back to jolly beach not a chance the way it’s being run & guests are treated, would we go back to Antigua yes it’s a beautiful island the people are friendly. It's not a luxury resort but the hospitality from all the workers here makes it a special resort. It's not a luxury resort but the hospitality from all the workers here makes it a special resort. The food option are limited but what ever they did have is delicious. The beach is incredible and the beach Dj John is playing great music all day. I'd definitely go back again. Room cleaning is 10 usd a day and there is a 12 usd per day resort fee. This was a very expensive experience and not worth the cost. Ironically, the resort cancelled our visit as we were driving there, which we should have taken as an omen really, but we carried on as we were already on the road and full of expectation. Security was not allowed by Reception let us in initially but eventually he did contact management to sort us out. The resort is very tired. It’s all in in more ways than one! The food was poor: in the pizzeria, chicken noodle soup and chicken arrigata was served cold and inedible. The pizza was fine. Chicken wrap at the grill was adequate. Drinks of course were fine but no decaf tea or coffee. Toilets were unclean, men’s had no toilet roll. No activities on offer. Not allowed to kayak “because it was too rough” - see photo! Basically, a very expensive patch of sand rented for the final day of holiday with a few drinks! This resort has been closed for three years. It open on December 22, 2022. It was nice having the beach, almost, to ourselves though. There is still MUCH work to be done. Our bathroom wasn't very nice. There are two pools but only one was open but no one swam in it ? In order to get our rooms cleaned we had to pay an extra $10.00 A a day. On the whole our meals were very good. We did have safes in our room. On our last day there was a sign at the front desk telling people where meals were being served daily. This would have been very helpful had we had it on our first day. Sometimes we felt that the staff weren't informed on all the changes going on at the resort. We had wonderful bartenders !!! Sandino, Kenisha and Petrina. Thank You for being so nice. All the employees were very friendly and caring. My Husband gave the resort a 1 1/2. We got what we paid for ... If you do get to Antigua and need a taxi please call Lyscome 774-4847 or Neil Evanson 268-726-0633. Both are wonderful guides who told us so much about their island. I have been to the Caribbean many times before but never to Antigua. We stayed at the Jolly Beach Resort which was very clean, well staffed, spacious and very friendly. Everyone was very welcoming from the first day and made us feel at home. Anything you needed was always available on site within a few minutes of asking. The white sandy beaches were beautiful and the ocean glowed that vibrant blue-green colour you see in documentaries. The food was great and there was always that Caribbean flair in every dish weather it was breakfast, lunch or dinner. I was originally apprehensive at first with dining options as I have multiple dietary restrictions, but had no problem finding great meals. We took a local bus into the city and discovered some wonderful places. We went to the local heritage museum for some history of the island, visited an old church that was beautiful and under renovation, stopped at Hemingway’s for lunch (which I highly recommend) and then headed to to the market to find some goodies. The entertainment at the resort was FANTASTIC and we loved the evening of “Carnival” and fire dancers during our stay. We rented a car for a day and took a self guided tour. We drove through the mountains and went to Devil’s Canyon and then toured the country side for the rest of the day. On our way back to the resort we found a beachside snack bar and decided to stop for a drink and watch the sun almost set. We visited St.John’s Harbour, toured Nelson’s Dock Yard Unesco World Heritage site, and Skullduggery Cafe! We had a blast in Antigua and highly recommended this place to visit! Thank you to everyone in Antigua that made our stay so fantastic, but especially to my sweet “singing” friend Judith that sang me through breakfast every morning and always put a smile on my face and an extra pep to my step!!!
