Wat Doi Suthep+Wat Phalat: Amazing Sunrise, Alms to Monks & Stunning city views

Itinerary
This is a typical itinerary for this product

Stop At: Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, Mueang Chiang Mai District, Doi Suthep 50200 Thailand

For this tour we wake up and leave early in the morning at 05:00 - 05:10 am. and drive up into the mountains to visit the Wat Phra That Doi Suthep temple ( A Chiang Mai Land-mark.) We highly recommend visiting this famous temple at dawn. The temple is quiet and the monks are just chanting, rousing and going out to receive alms offerings. Without any crowds you can enjoy the magical morning light and incredible views in serenity. It is the beginning to a great and wonderful day.

Doi Suthep temple is located on the peak of the Doi Suthep Mountains and is the most famous landmark in Chiang Mai. They say you have not truly been to Chiang Mai if you have not visited this temple ! At the top of the temple you can view the pagoda shining with real gold, and a viewing platform offers panoramic views of the whole Chiang Mai City – take in the wonderful countryside landscape while the sun rises behind the city and mountains. The morning sky and view could be immortalized in a beautiful painting ! Morning life at the temple is unforgettable -the sound of temple bells, monks chanting and the fascinating view of Chiang Mai will fill your heart. Don’t leave Chiang Mai without this impression.!!!

Before we continue to the other sites, we will have a nice and original taste of famous and delicious Chiang Mai food. ( Khoi Soy or Thai local breakfast sticky rice and Local Thai KFC. )

After sunrise. we will drop by at the hidden jungle temple and Wat U-Mong to enjoy the serenity surrounding & peace ! Both of them are unique meditation places, very interesting and serene.

See you in the morning at 5:00 a.m.-05:10 a.m.

Siphon is a great tour guide! He was very kind and full of knowledge, sharing so much about the history of the temples we saw and his experience there as an former monk. He even helped take photos for me as I was by myself. The temples had very little tourists as the country was just opening up again during my visit but that allowed us to take our time and me to take more pictures. This tour, even on a cloudy day, really showcases the beauty of Chiang Mai. It was a peaceful morning and I’m glad I went. I will definitely book this tour again the next time I visit Chiang Mai!

One of the highlights of our month in Thailand. If you can, do this. Non was our guide for the morning. He was brillliant. The very early start - 530 am was worth it. To wander the temple on top of the mountain, only your small group, the monks and the temple dogs, an unforgettable experience. To watch the sunrise, hear the monks chant and to participate in ancient rituals....not to be missed.

We were collected from our hotel by Tu. During the drive up the steep, winding road to the temple he gave us lots of information about the city and the life of a Buddhist monk. He himself had been a monk for 11 years and was very knowledgable about the religion and its history. The temple was all but deserted, we watched the sun rise over the smog caused by the local burning and gave alms to the monks. We were blessed twice. Then we had “breakfast”, it was cooked there and then for us and my allergy to chilli was catered for with no problem. The whole experience was certainly worth the 360 step climb to get there. We then went on to a hidden temple in the jungle. It was quiet, again no crowds, and all around was the sound of birdsong, a very peaceful place ( and the puppies were very cute !!) from here we went to the final temple the city. This one was different as it had purpose built tunnels for the monks to take shelter in as there were no caves in the area. Finally we were dropped at our hotel. I would thoroughly recommend this tour, the guide was knowledgable and we really learnt a lot during the short time we were with him.

Been to Wat Doi Suthep many times, but wanted to do something a little different this time. Sunrise tour seemed like the perfect thing! The 5am pick up in the morning is the only painful part. The rest is incredible. We took it easy and just went with the flow. Non really knows his stuff. I know it says he’s an “ex-monk” in the description, but that kind of made me wary and uncomfortable about how that would affect his opinion and tour. HOWEVER he explained so much about Buddhism to us, that it’s not like he’s anti-monk or anti-Buddhism, it’s that many men can be monks for parts of their lives—it’s not like you’re leaving “the brotherhood” or being sac-religious. He gave us lots of insightful info about his life as a monk, different temples, Thai history, cool stuff nearby to do, and of course great history about the temples we visited. Almost everything we asked him he knew how to answer!! I really learned a lot from him. And his English is great, and he’s super funny too. I would highly recommend him and this tour! If it’s still around when I have kids, I’ll definitely come back!

Visiting the temple Wat Phra That Suthep Doi at sunrise was a highlight of our time in Chiang Mail. No crowds with such a peaceful, beautiful atmosphere was worth it. Experiencing the ceremonial Buddhist traditions was special. Non, the tour guide who had been a monk for 6 years was very knowledgeable & lovely. He knew where all the great photo opportunities were! The hidden jungle temple afterwards was our favourite being in such a natural & peaceful environment with amazing sculptures. The Khao Soi was good & Non kindly ensured mine was with rice noodles as I can’t eat egg noodles. Highly recommend.

We booked the sunrise and city view tour; it was an amazing tour and I am glad we booked it. Our guide, Tom, was very informative and friendly; he was a monk previously and had a deep respect for history and culture. The view of the city was incredible and Tom took us to beautiful temples we may not have seen otherwise. Breakfast was a delicious surprise and transportation was great. Definitely worth an early wake up.

We are not Buddhist but what an experience to learn from a former monk, Non the guide, what it’s like to live as a monk. If Non doesn’t want to do tours in the future, he would make a great photographer! He took the best shots and knew all the best places to stage them. A photographer’s dream to not have the crowds in your shots.

We did this tour in Chiang Mai and a visit to this temple is a must. We were told on the tour that this temple can get up to 15,000 visitors in a day, so I can only imagine how crowded it is later in the day. I can't recommend doing this tour enough. We were picked up at 5.15am by Tom who was our tour guide for the day (he was AMAZING!). He was actually a Monk himself so had the most amazing stories to tell and the insights he could give us into different elements were the best added value. We were able to watch the monks changing during sunrise and Tom brought donations for them on our behalf which meant we were able to receive a blessing from the monks. It's a beautiful temple in daylight, but it's on another level during the darkness before sunrise with next to no people there.

This was one of the highlights of our visit to Chiang Mai. We were so moved by both the serenity and views. Our guide Non was very knowledgeable and friendly. The second temple, Wat Palad, was a happy surprise as were the puppies! So grateful for this experience and will be a lasting memory.

I am so happy that I took this tour. It is such an experience. The tour company picked me up on time from my hotel and we arrived at the temple before the sunrise. The tour guide was very knowledgeable about the temples we visited and about the history of Buddhism. We pretty much had the temple to ourselves and was able to tour the temple without issues. We were able to sit on a buddhist lesson between a monk and monks in training. We were also able to give alms to a monk and receive a blessing. After that, we watched the sunrise over Chiang Mai. It is a great view of the city. Then we visited two more temples, including the hidden temple (with its resident peacock). At the end, we had a traditional thai breakfast at a local restaurant.
