Overview

Peru offers so much variety and this itinerary combines it all. From colonial Lima, we fly across the Andes to Cusco and the Sacred Valley. While there, we will wander through ome of South America's best markets and discover a variety of Spanish and Inca heritage. The discovery of Machu Picchu in 1911 revealed an incredible Inca architectural masterpiece, and this startling find provides a grand finale to our trek along the Inca Trail. On the trail, we ascend from the jungle to the snowcapped Andean peaks to complete our spectacular approach to Machu Picchu.

Stop At: Plaza de Armas (Plaza Mayor), Jr. Junin and Jr. Carabaya, Lima Peru
Lima is a beautiful and historic city. During colonial times it was the center of the economy and, on your visit to the Plaza de Armas, the main square, you will see many buildings reminiscent of those in Spain. Particular highlights are the Archbishop’s Palace, the Cathedral (just ashort walk away from the plaza, located in the Santo Domingo Church on the Plaza de la Vera Cruz) and San Francisco Convent. The Convent is one of the most visited religious buildings in the city due to its famous catacombs which hold the remains of around 70, 000 people. We will also visit the Huaca Pucllana archaeological complex, another jewel in the cultural mix of the city.

Day 3: DAY 03: ARRIVAL CUSCO – AFTERNOON CITY TOUR ARCHEOLOGICAL SITES

Stop At: Plaza de Armas del Cusco, Cusco 08002 Peru
On arrival in Cusco, you will be met with assistance at the airport and transport to your hotel. The rest of the morning is free to rest and acclimatise to the high altitude. The city tour will start at 13:00 pm. Today we have a guided tour of Cusco and its nearby ruins. The city, once capital of the extensive Inca Empire, has seen many changes since Francisco Pizarro's men took the city with such apparent ease in November 1533. We explore the city by foot to appreciate its superbly constructed Inca walls and architecturally extravagant colonial churches and palaces. This also includes a visit of Koricancha, the ancient Golden Temple of the Sun. After this we take a short drive to visit the monolithic walls of Sacsayhuaman along with Tambomachay, better known as ‘the bath of the Inca’. Both sites are spectacularly set above the city. In the afternoon you may have time to explore some of the central parts of the city and a chance to look at some of the great varieties of local craft work.

The ancient Incan archeological site and city is located at the top of a mountain. There you will have the chance to witness the impressive stonemasonry skill of our ancient ancestors. Afterwards, you will go down into the quaint little town and wander through its colorful market where you can buy intricate, beautifully crafted locally hand-made products. After this, lunch will be served at a local restaurant. Then, you will continue to Ollantaytambo, a military, religious, and agricultural center of the Incas located at the top of a mountain. Note: unlike other small towns, this one has maintained its original Incan design including outstanding stone buildings and narrow streets. It was once used as a fortress, administrative and urban center. On our way back to Cusco we will stop in Chinchero, a place where the townspeople are famed for their preservation of traditional Andean spinning and weaving techniques. The locals have set up a market in the town square where you can purchase their beautiful handmade crafts.
