This whale watching tour was the highlight of our family's trip to Vancouver Island. We were 5 passengers, including a 6, 8 and 10 year old. Everyone enjoyed it immensely. We were able to follow the T99 family of Biggs Killer whales for a while (from a pretty great distance). After the hunted a seal, we were entertained with their happy dance (tails slapping and big jumps). It gets better. The whales started to swim towards our boat; our driver lowered a microphone into the water and we got to hear them! The whales were interested in the microphone and 3 of the 4 whales swam right up to our boat (and under it!!!) doing a show for us including jumps. Feet away. We felt like we won the lottery. Our driver was exceptional; she knew so much about whales. Even though this is a pricey excursion, you get what you pay for. It was incredible. Despite your initial first impressions of the Zodiak, it is a very stable, powerful boat. I would recommend this tour to everyone.Absolutely fantastic trip - all safety explained and felt very confident in our knowledgeable and friendly captain Shaun throughout. Outstanding tour! To see Orcas was the main goal of our honeymoon week here in Vancouver Island, BC . We booked the spots on-line. The tour just went past 3 1/2 hours due to awesome Captain Gregory giving us extra time to watch the unexpected treat of seeing a Transient Orca pod in action on the way back. The weather and water conditions were ideal. You are kitted up in a very warm, life preserver suit prior to walking down to the dock area. HINT: If your trip is on a sunny day, use a high SPF facial sunscreen and bring a sunhat with a chin strap to avoid the red lobster look my husband ended up achieving by the end of the tour, Capt. Greg then went over the tour, and did a brief safety talk before boarding the Zodiac. Zodiacs are small (max capacity 10) which is a great way to always have a great view from every seat, versus the large whaling catamarans where you fight for a deck spot to get a good vantage point. We went south to American Waters. The captain sprinkled the tour with interesting short lectures on the geographical, cultural, and mostly the marine biology history of the area. We spent most of the day with Resident Pod L. The several boats we saw, and ferries, are meant to stay a respectful distance from the whales. It was good to see the police harbor stop and speak to a boat that was not following these rules. Research boats are marked with yellow flags and are the only ones allowed close access to the orcas. One of these even had a small, red vested dog who was apparently trained to sniff out their scat for researchers to scoop up and research. It was truly a once in a lifetime trip to see these amazing animals breach, spout, spyglass, and just swim about. The sight of the pod's dorsal fins breaking the water is something I will never forget. Above all, trips like these really hit hard in terms of how much negative impact humans can still have on these magnificent animals. What a tragedy if these endangered resident pods continue to dwindle down. We are truly lucky to have had the tour we had today with Ocean EcoVentures. WELL WORTH every penny spent on this trip!!We pre-booked our whale watching trip for July 3, 2018 for noon. Booking was done easily and efficiently. The day of was exciting. The staff were great. We pre-booked our whale watching trip for July 3, 2018 for noon. Booking was done easily and efficiently. The day of was exciting. The staff were great. Passengers were fitted with outdoor gear for the zodiac. Captain Shaun made us feel safe at all times on the boat and on open water. As we travelled, we got to see sea lions and mountain goats before coming across the orcas. We spent quite a bit of time just watching the whales play in the water. We got to listen to the whales on the hydrophone. Shaun answered all of our questions and provided relevant information on the whales and their activities. What an awesome experience! Look forward to my next whale watching adventure.Tas and Gary took us out for an evening tour and we were able to see Orcas playing, breaching and hunting for porpoises. Tas and Gary took us out for an evening tour and we were able to see Orcas playing, breaching and hunting for porpoises. What impressed me most was the respect that the company shows the whales - always keeping an appropriate distance, slowing down to match their speed (great for photos!) and just the genuine excitement that the guides show when they see the whales and their behaviour. Both guides were incredibly knowledgeable and are clearly dedicated to the conservation of these beautiful animals. We did a half a day tour and our captain was Simon, the owner of the organization. We did a half a day tour and our captain was Simon, the owner of the organization. We had the best day of our holiday. Simon had so much knowledge about the orca's and the wildlife around Vancouver Island. We shared his love and passion for the mammals and we were amazed. We saw 9 orca's during our trip and T102 was soo close to our boot, we couldn't breath anymore, fantastic! Thank you for this great opportunity!
