Altitude gained: 1210m
Departing from Moshi a 45-minute drive will take you through the Village of Machame to the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate. We will patiently wait for our permits to be issued while watching the hustle and bustle of operations as many crews prepare for the journey ahead Enjoy the beautiful rainforest scenery and windy trails while your guide tells you about the local flora and fauna and natural wildlife. At these lower elevations, the trail can be muddy and quite slippery. We highly recommend gaiters and trekking poles here.

Although you end the day around the same elevation as when you began, this day is very important for acclimatization. From Shira Plateau we continue east up a ridge, passing the junction towards the Kibo peak before we then continue, South East towards the Lava Tower, called the “Shark’s Tooth” (elev. 4650m/15, 250ft). Shortly after the tower, we come to a second junction, which leads to the Arrow Glacier. We then continue to descend to overnight at Barranco Camp.

Altitude gained: 676m
After breakfast, we continue on a steep ridge up to the adventurous Barranco Wall to the Karanga Valley and the junction, which connects, with the Mweka Trail. This is one of the most impressive days to see the power, agility, and strength of your crew zip over this wall with what appears such ease. We continue up toward Barafu Camp, and once reached you have now completed the South Circuit, which offers a variety of breathtaking views of the summit from many different angles. An early dinner and rest as we prepare for summit night. Overnight at Barafu Camp.

Day 5: BARAFU CAMP – SUMMIT: 4.86KM /3MI UP | 5-7HRS | – MWEKA CAMP: 13KM /8MI DOWN | 5-6HRS | GLACIERS, SNOW CAPPED SUMMIT

Altitude gained: 1233m
Descent to 3106m/10, 190ft
Altitude lost: 2789m
Excitement is building as morning comes with an early start between midnight and 2 a.m. This is the most mentally and physically challenging portion of the trek.
We continue our way to the summit between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers trying to stay warm and focused on the amazing sense of accomplishment that lies ahead. With a switchback motion in a northwesterly direction and ascend through heavy scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim. You will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise during your short rest here. Faster hikers may view the sunrise from the summit. From here on your remaining 1 hour ascent to Uhuru Peak, you are likely to encounter snow all the way. We strongly recommend gaiters and trekking poles for uncooperative loose gravel and volcano ash terrain. Well-deserved rest awaits you to enjoy your last evening Overnight Mweka Camp.

After breakfast and a heartfelt ceremony of appreciation and team bonding with your crew, it’s time to say goodbye. We continue the descent down to the Mweka Park Gate to receive your summit certificates. As the weather is drastically warmer, the terrain is wet, muddy and steep and we highly recommend Gaiters and trekking poles.
From the gate, a vehicle will meet you at Mweka village to drive you back to your hotel in Moshi (about 30 minutes). Enjoy a long overdue hot shower, dinner and celebrations!!

We heard about Chiefs Tours through a friend that had climbed with them in 2017 and recommended them. My girlfriend and I did a 6 day Machame hike of Kili in early December and had an unforgettable experience. Chief’s team were very professional, friendly and helpful throughout. They are a local, fair and well organised company. Our guides Julius and Nicholas were particularly excellent with 40+ years climbing experience between them, we were in safe hands from start to peak to finish! I climbed Mt Kilimanjaro (Machame route 6 days) during the first week of December with Chief Tours and had an unforgettable experience! The whole team (porters, cook, guide and office staff) looked after me since the very first minute. They were always checking on how I was feeling and making sure I was enjoying my time as well as drinking enough water (to avoid altitude sickness) and eating enough food! Food was really delicious and the portions were so big that I could barely finish them! Friendly, and skilled guides! If you choose Chief Tours, you won't regret anything about it! Firstly - before I get into the review, apologies to Adidas and his team - I should have written this review a lot time ago! My finance and I travelled to Tanzania in January this year (2018), and spent the majority of our two weeks in the country accompanied by Chief Tours. We were met at the airport by Adidas himself, who drove us to our hotel and outlined our plans for the following days, as we were due to begin climbing Kilimanjaro on the Lemosho route a few days later. We immediately felt well looked after, which was reassuring - particularly for my partner who had never visited Tanzania before. Our climb was fantastic - well organised, a great laugh, we felt looked after and well informed the whole time, and thanks to Msafiri and his team, we made it to the top on the 26/01. The hot food (breakfast, lunch and dinner) really sets this tour company apart, as many of the other tour companies only provided sandwiches at lunch time. We also felt like the climbing group we were paired with was a great match for us - a sign of how organised and flexible this company can be. The Chief Tours porter team are fantastic and well worth a mention - our camp was always set up for us arriving each evening, and the team were always very friendly. Our climbing group actually managed to finish the climb a day early, and so in return Chief Tours offered to take us on a free extra excursion to a local spring - which was a very nice gesture. After our descent and a few days rest, we then did a 3 day safari with the company, which was absolutely fantastic. Our driver Tuma was great fun, and extremely knowledgeable. Hotel accommodation that Chief Tours organised for these days was fantastic, and we were provided with lunches for every day out in the various National Parks. An extra thing we would like to highlight is this company's willingness to look after you for the duration of your stay in Tanzania - even on days when we had no plans (rest days after the climb), Chief Tours always organised a driver to come round to take us to the local supermarket/restaurant, etc. As mentioned above, we were also picked up and dropped off at the airport. Thank you Adidas and your Chief Tours team. We hope you are all well! Chiefs tours was recommended to me by one of my close friends who also climbed Kilimanjaro back in 2021. I could not say enough as of how incredible this experience was and how Chiefs tours made it even more epic. The owner Adidas was quick to provide quotes on time, explain throughly what to expect during the trek, provide a list of what we needed to pack before our trip and an easy way to pay for the tour before we headed to Tanzania. Once we landed in Kilimanjaro, they were quick to get our details for pick up. The entire trip was door to door service, they picked us up from our hotel in Arusha and dropped us off back at the airport when we finished. While we were in Moshi they provided a very comfortable stay that included drinks and food, a comfortable bed, hot water and WiFi. We did the 7 day trek via Lemosho route. For our trek they got us the best guides and crew. We had 10 people for 2 of us hikers (right?!). Yes, you need this many people to get you up and down a mountain in 7 days. The crew was incredible, they made sure we had our tent set up before we got to every stop, they had a sleeping tent and a dining tent just for us. We had our own chef/cook Jeff who was incredible, his food was heavenly and he always made sure we were over fed with the appropriate food for the hike :) Oh, and the guides - Jackson and Calvin - I can't say enough great things about them. They were the coolest and nicest guides. Very well prepared, they have climbed that mountain more times that they can count. They made sure we always had clear what the game plan was and we were taken care of. They also pushed us to reach summit when we felt like altitude was taking our souls away and made sure we understood what to expect at every step. Make sure you ask for them and Jeff when you book your trekking. I highly recommend Chiefs tours to anyone who would like to climb Kili with a solid company who will make your experience that much greater. Note - TripAdvisor is not letting me upload the photo with the summit sign so I posted other photos from up top and sunrise :) our guides were also amazing photographers.
