Enjoy a guided 5-Day Basque Country Tour including lodging in Bilbao, San Sebastian (also known as Donostia) and Vitoria. This program runs every Monday for 2 people and up with visits to Bilbao, San Sebastian, Vitoria and Rioja.
Day 01: Bilbao
Arrival at the airport of Bilbao. Assistance and transfer to hotel. Guests will be provided with a full dossier with information about the Basque Country and the Program. Lodging at the hotel in Bilbao.
Day 02: Bilbao - San Sebastian
Breakfast. The route begins at 09:00 from the hotel in Bilbao and we will head towards San Sebastian. We will be able to admire the typical green and mountainous Basque landscape and pass through Azkoitia and after that arrive at the Sanctuary of Loyola.
In Loyola will stop and visit the shrine of harmonious proportions. After that we will follow the route, pass by Azpeitia and finally reach the coastal village of Zumaia. We will continue the journey along the coastal road with its magnificent views over the Bay of Biscay to reach the charming fishing village and Getaria, the birthplace of Juan Sebastian Elcano.
Afterwards, we will pass by Zarautz, a traditional enclave and tourist reference since the 19th century. We will continue the route to San Sebastian and enter the area of Ondarreta Beach. We will start a Panoramic Tour from our seat on the bus and discover the walks, the fine avenues of impeccable style, and all the highlights of San Sebastian. We will be able to appreciate the panoramic view of the Kursaal Palace, Anoeta Stadium, Victoria Eugenia Theatre and the manor houses of limestone.
Next, we will have free time for lunch. Our guide will recommend a selection of restaurants and menus. After the free time for lunch, we will initiate a Walking Tour into the Old Town, featuring a web of narrow streets, the old port, buildings, pubs and typical restaurants and bars. Later we will arrive at the hotel and have free time the rest of the day. Lodging at the selected hotel in San Sebastian.
Day 03: San Sebastian - Rioja - Vitoria
Breakfast. The route begins at 09:00 from San Sebastian, leaving the city to take the N1 highway towards Vitoria. We will pass by Tolosa, one of the old towns with the largest abundance of public buildings dating from 1600-1700. Little by little, we will enter Gipuzkoa and arrive at Ordizia, where there is a weekly market every Wednesday of the year.
We will continue the route and then we will arrive to Oñati, the most elegant village of Gipuzkoa province. Afterward, we will head on a road with magnificent views over cliffs to reach the most important Sanctuary of Gipuzkoa, the Shrine of Our Lady of Arantzazu.
Later, we travel near Salinas de Leniz before finally arriving to the Rioja Alavesa area. Pass by Labastida, a typical village in this area and then arrive at Laguardia, a town famous for its historic monuments and also its wineries. Enjoy free time to explore the town and lunch at one of its typical restaurants. Our guide will offer details of restaurants and available menus.
After lunch we will head to Vitoria and start a Panoramic Tour of this beautiful city, capital of Basque Country; with its government buildings, headquarters of the Basque government, the residence of the Lehendakari (Basque President), the Cathedral of Santa Maria, the church of the White Virgin, the “Casco Viejo”, and its streets and avenues.The entrance to the Artium Museum of Contemporary Art is included, with its permanent collections and temporary exhibits. The rest of the day will be free in order to explore on your own this city. Our guide will provide complete information about the activities that will be taken place during the stay in the city. Day 04: Vitoria - Bilbao
Breakfast. You will start the route heading towards the inner parts of Alava province through rural and natural landscapes. Arrive to Gesaltza (Salinas de Añana), where you will enjoy a guided visit in order to learn more about its primitive system, documented since the 9th century for obtaining salt by evaporation of water in a series of terraces, which occupies 150 hectares. Continue the tour through the town of Orduña, located in a valley surrounded by the mountains of Sierra Salvada. Orduña is an island geographically located in Alava where you will go on a guided walking tour. During this stretch, you will be able to pass next to small villages and contemplate the magnificent natural life with its mountains and verdant landscapes. Following the route, arrive to the Ayala, one of the few places where nature is so generous.
You'll find steep hills with strange shapes, green fields and vast forests of oaks, providing some of the most beautiful areas of the Basque country. The valley, which dominates the center and north, is complemented by the impressive towering Sierra Salvada, proud and defiant to the south. Stop at Balmaseda, where you will lunch at a typical restaurant with drinks included. After lunch, continue the route to reach the coast by Santurtzi. Enter this town located on the left bank of the estuary of Bilbao with its fishing port and seafaring tradition. Then, continue the journey along the edge of the sea to Portugalete, where you will be able to see the Transporter Bridge of Biscay, famous for its hanging bridge, which dates from 1893, it is the oldest transport hanging bridge in the world still working.
Once on the other side of the bank, in Getxo, go to the famous marina with its quiet walks by the sea from where one has a magnificent view of Abra de Bilbao and the whole industrial zone located on the other superport side of the shore. Later, arrive to Bilbao and start your Panoramic Tour. Then, arrive to your selected hotel in Bilbao.
Day 05: Bilbao
Breakfast. There will be free time in the city until the agreed time for the transfer to the airport.
