Sharing the Iberian Peninsula with Spain, Portugal is often overshadowed by its larger neighbor to the east. While the country is small and isolated from the rest of Europe, it is also a culturally unique country with a deep history.
The capital city Lisbon is the country’s largest and somewhat a rarity in Western Europe in that it faces the Atlantic Ocean. Outside of the nation’s capital, there is a surprisingly diverse landscape that awaits travelers. Once can travel from green mountains in the North, rocky mountains in the Center of the country, a desert like landscape in the Alentejo region, and finally to the Mediterranean beaches of Algarve.
