Update: Russia vs Saudi Arabia 5-0
The world has been waiting 4 years to witness the biggest stage in football as 32 countries will compete to hold an 18- carat trophy that estimated to value $10 million dollars. The World cup is set by 32 teams in 8 groups playing 3 games and the top 2 teams will advance to the round of 16. After that, it’s winning or goes home. This is where enemies become teammates, and teammates become enemies to accomplish one goal, win the World Cup. Only one nation can win and here are the top 10 teams that are favorite to win the FIFA World Cup Russia.
Colombia made a huge impact in the 2014 World Cup who saw them losing against the host nation, Brazil, in the quarter-finals. Although losing to Brazil, James Rodriguez being only 22 at the time woke the world as he led the Colombia team to the furthest they have ever been in the tournament which secured him a move to Real Madrid. Now a more experienced player that has played in 2 of the top 5 best clubs in the world he will be seeking blood and revenge to last World Cup fallout. In a tough group with a strong Polish side who has demonstrated, they can compete with the best, Senegal, and Japan will be seeking to compete along Colombia to qualify to next round. With such a strong attacking force with the likes of Radamel Falcao, Juan Cuadrado, and Carlos Bacca they will be a force to reckon with in Russia.
Even Though England has disappointed in the last two major tournaments in there humiliating exit against Iceland in the Euro 2016 and not being able to win a game in the group stage of the 2014 World Cup. However, this World Cup should be different as England has a mixture of some old players with a lot of youngsters who are hungry to make their presence known in Russia. Players such as Marcus Rashford, Raheem Sterling, Dele Alli, Harry Kane, and Jesse Lingard who are all at the age of 25 had huge impacts in their clubs now have to do the same for the England National Team. Harry Kane is the player to watch out of this squad as he has scored an astonishing 108 goals in 153 appearances in the English Premier League and in this year’s campaign scored 45 goals in 52 appearances. England is placed in a group with Belgium, Panama, and Tunisia where Belgium will be their hardest test of the group stage. With their young attacking squad that contains pace and fearless when it comes to attacking defenders can be one of the top surprises in the World Cup.
Uruguay placed second in a tough CONMEBOL qualifier with Brazil placing first as Argentina and Colombia placing right behind them. They are also considered the powerhouse of their group in which Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the host Russia are in. After a disappointing loss against James Rodriguez Colombia in the 2014 World Cup Uruguay will be hoping to make the same bang as they did in 2010 losing in the semi-finals against the dutch. With players such as Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani who will be leading the attacking force and both are experienced in playing in the World Cup as they were part of the team in 2010. Luis Suarez had a fantastic season with Barcelona as they were one game away from accomplishing an undefeated season in La Liga with scoring 33 goals in 52 appearances. Edinson Cavani also had a great season as he was able to complete the French double with PSG by winning Ligue 1 and Coupe De France by scoring 40 goals in an impressive 51 appearances. It’s going to be crucial that both Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani perform well together as their nation’s dream to win a third World Cup lies between their feet.
Portugal is the defending Euro 2016 champions after beating France 2-1 in extra time with an injured Ronaldo who was subbed out in the first half. Some might say the soccer gods were in their favor others will say a win is a win but it has to be noted that Portugal managed to win the EURO 2016 without winning a game in the first 90 minutes after qualifying to the round of 16 which is the reason they are placed 7th. However, one should never bet against Cristiano Ronaldo as he can perhaps lead Portugal towards another successful tournament. Playing in a group with Spain, Morocco, and Iran they’re favored to qualify to the next round but their matchup against Spain should be a game where they can prove to the world their potential. Ronaldo just recently won his 5th Champions League trophy to his case and will dream to win a World Cup to which can add value to a potential 6th player of the year award. He is also among the top 2 best players in the world at the moment and at his age of 33, he might be seeing his last world cup. With Real Madrid, he scored an outstanding 44 goals in 44 appearances being considered as one of the best Strikers in the game. Players such as Bernado Silva, Pepe, Ricardo Quaresma, Andre Silva, and Joao Moutinho performances will be crucial in Ronaldo’s quest to win his first World Cup.
Roberto Martinez has plenty to choose from as he has one of the most skillful squads in the World Cup. With the likes of world class players such as Eden Hazard, Romelu Lukaku, Dries Mertens, Kevin De Bruyne, Thibaut Courtois, and Michy Batshuayi that has everyone a fan of them for the World Cup. So much individual talent and a Belgium team that has risen through the rankings in the last 5 years would be an exciting sight to watch. The Belgium team were unfortunate to lose in the 2014 World Cup against Argentina as well as a disappointing loss against Wales in Euro 2016 they will be hoping to bounce back this summer. With most of their players gaining experience from the last two previous tournament losses, it will be interesting if their individual talent can perform together as a team and exceed fan’s expectations. Both Kevin De Bruyne and Eden Hazard are players to watch for Belgium as they have played vital roles for their club in England. Eden Hazard has the pace, intelligence, and dribbling skills to take on any defender in the game. While De Bruyne is a magician when it comes to supplying the ball to his team as well as great dribbling skills. De Bruyne and Hazard can cause a lot of headaches to competitors and become contenders for the biggest prize of them all.
The Argentines will be hoping that Lionel Messi can finally bring them a World Cup since it was last achieved in 1986. Messi and Argentina have not been in a perfect form through their road to Russia as it took a Messi hat-trick in the last game against Bolivia to secure them a spot. Although they did lose against Germany in the final at the 2014 World Cup Argentina has struggled to have any luck when it comes to finals. Since 2014 Argentina has lost in the World Cup final, 2015 Copa America final, and 2016 Copa America Centenario finals losing any of these finals inside the 90 minutes. However, with that being said one should never look away from the extraordinary talent Argentina has with its electrifying attacking team with Aguero, Higuain, Lionel Messi, Di Maria, and Paulo Dybala. These players have all a great season with their clubs and will hope they can continue their streak at the World Cup. It could be said as well that this might be the last time Lionel Messi has the opportunity to accomplish success for his nation as he has done at Barcelona time after time winning a domestic double and claiming his fifth award as top scorer in Europe with 34 goals. Lionel Messi has proven to the world with his great skill of play that he can potentially be the greatest player of all time but some might say that all he needs is a World Cup to secure that.
The French National Team were disappointed in the Euro 2016 in their home soil at the final against Portugal. They were highly favorites after beating Germany in the semi-final but were unfortunate to have lost in extra time after Ronaldo was carried in the first half. Now they are in a similar position as they are one of the favorites to win the World Cup in Russia and it’s rightfully so as it shows in the depth of their squad. France has an all-around team with great players and substitutes to fulfill every position to make another run to the final as they did back in 2006. Zinedine Zidane was in stardom during the time they made their final in 2006 and the French have numerous players that can fulfill that role in this year’s squad. Antoine Griezmann and Kylian Mbappe will be demonstrating to the world their swagger when it comes to their celebrations and style of play. With a mixture of young talent and experienced players in the midfield, center backs, and a solid goalkeeper they are going to be a threat to the world. France is also in a group where Denmark seems to be their biggest threat while Peru and Australia will seem to be an easy win. It should be not a difficult task for France to qualify to next round but the question is if they’re whether going play to their potential.
La Furia Roja which translates to The Red Fury is a perfect nickname for Spain’s squad selection over the last 10 years. In 2008 through 2012 Spain showed their dominance as they accomplished winning back to back Euros and the World Cup in 2010 playing some stunning football. Coached by Luis Aragones and Vicente Del Bosque Spain had a tiki-taka style of play that surprised the whole world. Players such as Xavi, Iniesta, Puyol, Sergio Ramos, David Villa, Fernando Torres, and Iker Casillas that lead to their huge success. However, not every era lasts forever as Spain was kicked out of the World Cup group stages in 2014 after a disappointing set of matches. It seems like they were missing some sort of flair as some of their players were set to retire. Now they have the opportunity to erase last World Cup deficit with new young players to fulfill empty key roles that have been missing. Players such as Isco, David De Gea, Marco Asensio, Saul Niguez, and Lucas Vazquez who are soon to be the future of Spain can embark on that same spark they have been missing. Although Isco doesn’t start for Real Madrid he is a going to be a huge contribution towards Spain’s road to winning the World Cup.
Brazil is the most successful country when it comes to winning the World Cup as they have won 5 in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994, and 2002. The Brazilians have struggled to recapture their “Joga Bonito” style of play since losing to France in the 2006 World Cup, but this new generation has the potential to bring that back. Led by Neymar who has some legendary shoes to fit towards the likes of Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Rivaldo, Romario, and Pele as they all won a World Cup for their country. Neymar is also the fourth highest goal scorer as he has scored 53 goals in 85 caps and will hope to continue that road as he is only 2 goals away from reaching the legendary Romario. However, Brazil will be hoping to redeem themselves after their heartbreaking 7-1 lost against the Germans in the 2014 World Cup in the semi-finals. They were unfortunate to lose Neymar due to a fractured vertebra against Colombia in the quarterfinals, which could have resulted in their huge loss against Germany. Neymar is also coming back from injury while playing with his club team PSG but is said to be fit once the World Cup arrives and will be hoping he could lead Brazil once again to the biggest stage. Brazil is also stacked with some amazing players behind Neymar with Marcelo, David Luiz, Thiago Silva, Fernandinho, Casemiro, and Paulinho leading in the defensive play.
Germany is favorites to reclaim the World Cup this year in Russia as they propose a star lighting squad. They recently won the Confederations Cup with what some can say was their “B” squad and tormented every team they played. It was a good speculation for Joachim Low as he witnessed a young Timo Werner who can lead the front line as he has scored 7 goals in just 10 appearances for Germany. Germany will be hoping they can continue their historic run as they have been qualifying to the quarter-finals since 1982. They are a deadly team when it comes to the World Cup but are set in a difficult group with Mexico, Sweden, and South Korea. Mexico being a team that tends to play at the level of their opponents will be an interesting matchup for the Germans, while Sweden is a team that should not be taken for granted as they eliminated Italy in a qualification match, and South Korea has the potential to relive their 2002 magical run by making it to the semi-final. Germany will be fortunate to recover Manuel Neuer from injury as he won the golden glove back in 2014 and will be crucial for Germany success. Mesut Ozil and Toni Kroos are the players to watch for Germany as they will be running the midfield operations. Although, Ozil hasn’t contributed to much of Arsenal’s success during the past years but tends to always show up for Germany playing some memorable assists or passes. Toni Kroos, on the other hand, has brought a lot of success behind Real Madrid’s midfield as he has defined himself as one of the best minefields in the world.
